SMITH, Robert D 1841, Perthshire, Scotland
« on: Friday 12 March 21 01:13 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find my third great grandfather's parents and siblings. I have been going around in circles for so long and I really would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Here is what I have;
Robert D Smith- possibly 'Drake' and I say this as this name was mentioned in a funeral notice.
Born: Abt. 1841 in Perthshire (possibly) going by his arrival in NZ and marriage.
Immigrated to NEW ZEALAND 10 Apr 1863 onboard the WAVE QUEEN, arriving in Dunedin and eventually settling in Oamaru.
Married Jessie Turnbull in NZ (she was from Glasgow)
Had 9 sons (I'm hoping their middle name may help to find his mother)
James Marshall
Robert Young
John Pearson
Albert Bayley
William Cairn
Samuel Wilkie
Alexander Bellenger
Albert Richardson
Stillborn unnamed

I have no siblings names and believe he came to New Zealand by himself. I know this is a long shot as Smith is a common surname but it would mean so much to me if I could trace back another generation. Thank you so much in advance :)

Welcome to RootsChat.

There is no surviving record in Scotland of a birth of a Smith with given name Drake before your Robert arrived in New Zealand. That means that you are looking for a plain Robert Smith, which isn't quite as bad as looking for a John or James, but still needle-in-haystack. There are 'only' 177 baptisms of Robert Smiths in the surviving Scottish records from 1840 to 1845.

I note from the NZ indexes that he was married in 1864 and that he died in 1901, age given as 56. This suggests that he was born in 1844/1845 and if so he was very young when he married. What was his occupation (and how did he manage to support a wife when he was aged just 20 and only a year after arriving in NZ)?

I take it that you have seen both his marriage certificate and his death certificate, and neither has any information about his parents?

Are those sons listed in order of birth? And were there no daughters?

Do you know the names of Jessie Turnbull's parents?

There were no daughters. Yes, the sons are in order of birth except the stillborn one (1873).
JessieTurnbull's obituary noted that Robert was a boastswain. When he arrived in New Zealand he was a digger for a time and the carpentry. He resided in Waitahuna, Southland. Then moved to Oamaru. First son was born in 1865 in Waitahuna, the last three born in Oamaru. I'm just not sure where to from here apart from waiting for death cert to arrive which will hopwfully have his parentage noted. I really was hoping to find siblings too but I'm fast realising this may not be possible.

This suggests that he was born in 1844/1845
Forfarian.

Probably nothing but......

That would suggest a middle name of Dallas.

Added-
Or a middle name of Dyce.......

Born 1 April 1846, married 21 November 1864 at just 18½ years old?
