Grants Duthil
« on: Friday 12 March 21 09:25 GMT (UK) »
Looking at the Grants from Duthil and have a question around the clan Grant centre. Are all the burials in there descendants of the same Grants? I am looking at John Grant 1799-1881 and Mary Macgregor. He died at Duthil but cant find any burials in Duthil, Carrbridge, Inverallan, Abernethy, Grantown. His son also John died in 1915 also in Duthil, where else could they be buried?
I appreciate there are an lot of Grants in the area, but they all seem to be different family to mine!

No. I am willing to bet that they are not, and even more willing to bet that there are insufficient records to connect all of the ones who are in fact related.

Are you looking in the actual burial registers, or are you looking at gravestone inscriptions? Remember that not everyone had a stone.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I am looking on Ancestry, find a grave, find my past, just putting in lots of different people from that time/area as hoping if find one might find others.

Not necessarily an effective search method - a bit hit and miss. See https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=714261.0

Go to the source. I don't know where the burial records for Duthil and Inverallan are held but start by asking the Highland Archive Centre https://www.highlifehighland.com/archives-service/ once they reopen. If they don't have them they will know where they are.

I was using scotlands people when I started researching years ago, but have lost everything on there now as didn't buy credits for 2 years. I have found lots of similar trees, who have got my correct death for there family member, but I know its mine so cant be theirs, but as that link says its easy to assume one roughly the right dates/area. Does anyone know if I buy more credit now will all my old purchases be re instated?

I believe so, but I'm not sure.
