Help with BMD of ancestors parents
« on: Saturday 13 March 21 20:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I’m stuck trying to work out the parents of an ancestor, I have managed to find out quite a bit about their daughter a Joan Wallis born 1914 in Camberwell but I am coming up short trying to find information on her parents John Wallis an accountants clerk and Emily Watson, finding their marriage has also been troublesome.
The story goes, Joan was unofficially adopted by one of my family members when her parents left to go overseas. When Joan was born they lived on Elfindale Rd, Camberwell, London.

Any help would be gratefully received

Several questions:
Did Joan have any siblings as far as you know?
DO you know when her parents left? Or where they went? Did they go together?
Do you have any idea at all of the parents' ages or whereabouts they may have come from?

Yes that’s her and no I don’t have the answers to those questions. I’d usually start with their marriage which I haven’t been able to identify and I haven’t found them on the 1911 census either.  There is a Robert Wallis listed in the birth registration with Watson as a mother but he was born in Lincoln.

It’s probably a wild goose chase 🤔

Have you checked the birth address to see who was living there in 1911?

Yes I have, there were two flats but  none of the occupants matched.  It is the same with the electoral rolls.

There is a John Primmer Wallis , born abt 1888, in Camberwell in 1901 and 1911 who is a clerk and his father is an accountant.
There is an Emily Louisa Watson in Camberwell, born abt 1891 too.
There are, though, marriages for each of them to other spouses around the same time as Joan’s birth.  :-\

Was Joan adopted soon after her birth?

What was Joan's birth date?

John Primmer Wallis married on 22 July 1913.

Emily Louisa Watson married on 1 August 1915.

Ohh interesting, I hadn’t contemplated that they weren’t married, if that’s the case it could explain the unofficial adoption. She was born in 1914.
