It may be an idea to give the date parents married & dates/places for your g/mother & siblings to work out where the unknown child may fit in?

Annie

Add...Surname doesn't match your g/m surname?
Is it a DNA match or just found on a tree?

As the 1939 register does not give relationships have you considered that she may have been evacuated because of the war

I couldn't confirm that finding but she is on census with my great nan and her sister.

Rose ada hankinson (great nan)
Margaret Hilda Emily Hankinson (great aunt)

I only thought my nan had one brother and no other siblings. Rose died in 1948 and her sister Margaret few years later..

I found one young lady who puzzled us for a while - she appeared on one census with the family, but as "adopted" and with a different surname. The next census she was elsewhere, working as a domestic servant nearby. She appears a few years later, getting married from the family address, and later incorporates the family surname into the names of some of her own children... and those got passed down the years and generations.
We eventually worked out ( found her mother and birth certificate) she was possibly a little "mistake" by either the Head of the Family or his son, with the woman who was her mother, and taken in by the family. Her mother had already had one child before this one, without a partner or spouse.
That may be a similar sort of thing. We found it by working all around the names and people concerned.

Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
