Dr Steele's Academy/Crescent Academy 1851 - employment records?
« on: Tuesday 16 March 21 08:38 GMT (UK) »
Would there be any 'employment records' for Dr Steele's Academy/Crescent Academy between 1836-1882 (Conchan).  I have two census for an ancestor but I don't know which one to go for so I thought if there were any records, I could narrow it down.  My ancestor might have been the servant there in 1851?

Dr. Steele's Crescent Academy burned down in 1868.
(I have previously reported on the death of fireman Duncan Brierley in that fire.)

The Academy then moved from The Crescent to Strathallan Hall.
It was closed in 1881 after the death of his wife.

See: http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/history/educ/do_stl.htm

There may be records at the Manx Museum, but we are in lockdown at the moment, and the museum is closed.
Might be worth looking at www.iMuseum.im?

N.B. Conchan is an older spelling of Onchan.

Thanks for the info.  I have tried the Museum but they didn't have or know anything, which was surprising really. I shall look at the sites you mentioned.
