Did Mary Wade HUTTON actually marry Jack ANSTRUTHER?
« on: Tuesday 16 March 21 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Did Mary actually marry Jack ANSTRUTHER [Senior] and who was he?  Real or fantasy?
Jack [senior] is named on the 1912 birth certificate of Jack [junior].  As yet no trace found for Jack [senior].

At this time, is the 'Father' required to be present at the birth registration?

Mary Wade Hutton [later ANSTRUTHER] [Dressmaker]
1883–1972
BIRTH 2 MAR 1883 • BRADFORD, Yorkshire West Riding,
DEATH DEC 1972 • ELSTREE, Hertfordshire, England

Mary had two sons:

Frank De La War HUTTON [LATER Anstruther]
1910–2000
BIRTH 16 APR 1910 • FULHAM, Middlesex
DEATH MAR 2000 • NORTH EAST HAMPSHIRE, Hampshire
======
Jack De Le War Anstruther [Junior] RAFVR

BIRTH 13 MAY 1912 • BRADFORD, Yorkshire West Riding,
DEATH 17 NOV 1942 • KIA, CONSIGNY, HAUTE MARNE, France.. of 1 Cavendish Ave, Ealing, Middlesex
=====
In 1911 Mary and her new son Frank  are visitors with the de la Warr BOXALL family in Fulham which might explain the source of this middle name for Jack De Le War ANSTRUTHER [junior] on his 1912 Birth Certificate.

Very confusing  :-\

Frank Hutton, registered in Fulham in 1910 - no mother's maiden name.

1911 census - Mary Hutton and son Frank are with the Boxall family.  Mary says that she has been married for 2 years, and 1 child born to the marriage.

Jack Anstruther registered in 1912 - mother's maiden name = Hutton.

1939 Register - Mary A Anstruther, widow, born 1883, with Jack, born 1912.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

This would fit with dob on 1939 register entry BumbleB found and OP gave, if parents a bit tardy about registering birth and it just went into following quarter

At this time the father would have to be present (if not married to the mother) to be named on birth certificate or sign a declaration that he is the father. But if an unmarried mother pretended to be married and named the father, the registrar would take her word for it.

This is what I feared, that Mary Wade HUTTON merely 'acquired' both the names ANSTRUTHER and DE LA WARR for her sons and herself, and that the surname ANSTRUTHER just seem attractive to her.  There seems to no way to identify the supposed 'father' Jack ANSTRUTHER.  Yet another brickwall!

When Frank's birth was registered there is nothing on the birth reg index to connect him with the names de la Warr or Anstruther. He may have a different father from Jack. Have you got Jack's birth cert? If so what is the father's occupation?

Thank you Lizzie for persisting with my puzzle.
The father's occupation is given as VALET [deceased]. As yet, I have not found a deceased ANSTRUTHER in the 9 months before the 1912 birth of Jack [junior].
I suspect that the Valet's 'death' was merely his disappearance and leads me to presume that the surname ANSTRUTHER was made up.  Where was he for the 1911 census?

There might be some truth in Jack jnr's father being a valet. Maybe he was the valet to someone called Anstruther. Jack would have been conceived about August 1911, then born in Bradford district. But we don't know if Mary met him in Fulham or nearby and returned to Yorkshire for the birth or left Fulham after the 1911 census and met Jack's father in Yorkshire and stayed there for the birth.
The de la Warr connection is a bit odd, surely more to it than just liking the name. Not only did she give the name to Jack but retrospectively to Frank. Have you investigated the Boxall connection?. Charles Boxall says his birthplace is Norfolk and Mary Wade Hutton is from Yorkshire, so no obvious connection there.

Could John Anttreter, a Bavarian Valet have morphed into Jack Anstruther?
