McGilton Family
« on: Thursday 18 March 21 20:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone...
my husband and I are approaching our16th wedding anniversary in a few days and my gift to him is a compilation of family ancestry I have been researching and putting together for him. He is unaware that I am doing this and I hope to present it to him so we can pour over all the fun treasures I have discovered along the way.
I would love some help if anyone is able to provide more information.
I have been able to trace back to my husband's GGG Grandfather to Co. Dublin b1840. His name was Joseph McGilton and he married Alice McGilton (maiden name of Moore) b 1846 in Co. Dublin, Ireland. His GG and Great Grandfather's and mothers were also all born in Co. Dublin., as well.
I was wondering if there is any way to learn more about this lineage--are they originally from Scotland and if so, do you have any information in regards to this? Is there any connection with the Ballycopeland Windmill?
I am willing to share the information I have gathered thus far and would so greatly appreciate any information that would help my inquiry!
Blessings and many thanks in advance!

Ballycopeland Windmill is in Co. Down which isn't anywhere near Dublin so is there a reason you think there might be a possible connection?

As well as the Irish Genealogy site to view vital records (births, marriages, deaths) there are some church records here-
https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

Are you sure Joseph McGilton was born c1840 and wife Alice Moore born c1846?
There's a baptism (parents John McGilton & Alicia [Alice] Moore) in 1857 for Alicia McGilton at St. Michan's R.C. Church (her marriage also there in 1883) and a brother James married 1886 in another church.
(I just put in McGilton as surname & Joseph as other name.

? McGILTON - Bangor   - a miller; renovated Ballyholme Windmill c. 1900
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/Mc/McGaMcGi.htm
Lots of other McGiltons there also.

This McGilton family were millers-

However, bit of a leap from earlyish 1800s Dublin to Co Down.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.
I will double check the dates I have found from previous research and of what I gathered from my husband's family. Thank you for that resource as far as church records, etc. go. As soon as I finish writing this reply, I will begin exploring that.
As for my question about the windmill. I understand they are not near each other and although we have traveled to Ireland, we have yet to explore Northern Ireland (it was on our to do list before the world became topsy turvy). I just wanted to connect dots and if there was any connection between my husband's family and the McGiltons who operated the wind mill, to be sure I included that in all my information.
I did come across some information that leads me to believe they weren't based on their religion. My hubby's family is/was Catholic.

You didn't mention in your original post that the 1901 census says Joseph was born in Belfast. However, according to the census Joseph was born c1834 and wife Alice c1835 (although ages can vary from one record to another).

It's possible, of course, the Alice was Catholic but Joseph wasn't until their marriage.

To be honest, I did not discover that Joseph was born in Belfast. I gathered everyone had been born in Co. Dublin thus far in my research. That is news to me that he was born in Belfast. I will try to delve deeper into that now.
Thank you :)
