St Katherine's Church, Northampton
« on: Saturday 20 March 21 10:52 GMT (UK) »
I must admit to being a little confused here.
Is there a distinction between (a) St Katherine's Church and All Saints Church? I have several baptisms around the turn of the last century entitled "Baptism in the Parish Church of St Katherine" but the front page of the records is entitled "Northamptonshire Record Office: Northampton All Saints Baptisms 1892 - 1920"
So, for clarity, how should I record such a baptism listed in November 1900? St Katherine's or All Saints?
Many thanks
Alan

From the All Saints website:

All Saints is part of the "All Saints with St Katharine & St Peter in Northampton" Parish in the Church of England. All that remains of St Katharine's Church is the Churchyard, and a stone marking the site of the High Altar.

Parish registers for St Katherine's were discontinued in 1912.

Thanks for that.

I do realise that the church was demolished and all that is left is a garden and part of the cemetery. What happed to the church after 1912 which led to its demolition?

There is an old postcard from about 1905 of the interior of St Katherine's which looks as if it was a very presentable building in a good state of repair.

Cheers Alan

Now I'm even more mystified about what happened to this church. As said above, St Katherine's Parish Registers were apparently discontinued in 1912 but baptisms, marriages etc took place there long after that.

I have been browsing the Newspaper Archives and the only piece which appears to be of relevance is this one from the Northampton Mercury dated October 11th 1946 which reads:

"St Katharine's Church, Northampton built little over a century ago and capable of seating a thousand worshippers, which is to be demolished to make way for a borough was memorial of buildings of community interest grouped around a garden  of rest"

There is also a photograph of the exterior.

No other explanation of the whys and wherefores of this planning decision. So what happened in the 30 odd years in between?

The parish in Northampton is called "All Saints with St Katharine & St Peter in Northampton".
Baptisms, marriages and services would have continued under the name of the parish, but in a different building.

Just as happened many times in London after the Great Fire.

So, for clarification of my original question: a baptism recorded as taking place in the Parish of St Katherine's in 1900 would have been physically carried out in St Katherine's Church!

Thanks for that
