1881 census transcription
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 12:14 GMT (UK) »
A long, long time ago I was involved in transcribing part of a census, and it must have been the 1881. I did this as a member of Kent FHS, and I wonder if anyone else took part in this? As far as I remember, we were each given 2 sections, in my case one local to me and one which was a part of Chatham. I guess I had a choice in these, as my husband was from Chatham. I also seem to remember being told that each section was to be done by two different people and cross checked.
Can anyone confirm my memories or add anything?

I thought that the LDS did the 1881 which is why everyone has to allow free access to it, maybe the FHS was helping them.  I was told it was double checked by a LDS member

That does make sense. So it seems I was right about it being cross-checked.

A Family History group I belonged to also did transcribing of the 1881, I can confirm that is the reason access is free.

I did some when I was living in Wales - chose a local one which was a nightmare as we hadn't lived there long and I couldn't understand many of the Welsh names!!

I found my husband's knowledge of Chatham quite useful - I remember asking him "does that really say Magpie?" "Yes there was a pub there called the Magpie!"

The Magpie closed in 2011.

He hadn't lived in Chatham for a long time! I know that site and have used it sometimes.
