Margaret Riddel - Mile End Old Town workhouse
« on: Sunday 21 March 21 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm hoping someone might be able to help.  I ordered the death entry for Margaret Riddel (b. 1786 Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland; nee Cochrane; widow of John Riddel) and it indicated that she died in 1859 at the City of London workhouse in Mile End Old Town Eastern district.  Would anyone either know how I could see if I could access (get a copy?) of her records for the workhouse or is anyone able to see if it's available online.  I don't have an active Ancestry subscription.

Thanks!

as a start point as they have quite a few links that may prove useful.. You could try
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/records/
....
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/MileEndOldTown/
Also
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/60391/
https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/history-and-heritage/london-metropolitan-archives
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/1557/
Family Search has her in 1851 census and 1841... so if you join you can have a look at these also..
1841 lists her husband and widow at 1851...

Good luck with your search...  my great grandmother also in workhouse in London in the 1890's...
and died after being moved to an asylum...

Thanks Mark!

I knew she and her husband John Riddel had been in Ontario, Canada in 1836 but I hadn't been able to find her since and had no idea if she had returned to England.  Obviously they did.  I found her death date on her son's gravestone.  I'll look at everything you sent me.   Thanks again!

I wrote to the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) and they indicated she likely would have been in the City of London Union workhouse, also known as the Bow Road workhouse.  They also indicated that no records for this workhouse in the 1850 appear to be held at the LMA and are unlikely to have survived.  Too bad, but at least now I know that I don't need to search anymore.
