Charles COTTLE marriage 1830s
« on: Thursday 25 March 21 05:15 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find a marriage for a Charles COTTLE to a Mary DIAMOND in the early to mid 1830s. That is her surname according to various trees on Ancestry. Mary's surname could have come from the death registration of one of their sons Charles Joseph who died in NZ in 1918.

Charles and Mary and two sons William born 1835 and Charles Joseph born 1838 came to NZ in 1841. Mary died in NZ in 1841 and Charles snr in 1848 so no info on her name on those deaths.

William was baptised at Weston and Charles Joseph at Swainswick. Charles Snr and his siblings were all baptised at Swainswick.

The only marriage I can find is a Charles COTTLE to a Mary CURREY in 1834 at Long Ashton. Mary is a widow so could be a possibility although seems a bit far away from Bath.

Thanks.
Ian C

Edit
The DIAMOND name is also on the GRO website for Charles Joseph's birth.

Wellington Independent 3 May 1848 p 2

An unfortunate man named Cottle, who for the last two or three months has been confined in the Lunatic Asylum, expired suddenly on Wednesday last...... who was a widower, has left two children, aged ten and twelve years, to lament his loss.

Obituary Charles Joseph COTTLE -

Manawatu Standard 20 Feb 1918 p7

There is a lot of information in the obituary. Charles Joseph COTTLE was two when his mother died, and seven when his father died.

Charles and William have lost their mother in 1841. You might suspect that father is not able to raise them alone, the more so if he goes into the asylum.

Who raised these boys?  I wonder if there are relatives in the colony who cared for them?

What happened tp brother William COTTLE, born 1835?  You might expect the obituary to mention a brother?

NZ BDM marriage
1861/3875  Charles Joseph   COTTLE     marr.  Mary Ann   GILL

Can you please list all the information on this marriage certificate.....names of witnesses would be useful.

Do you know how old Mary was when she died?  A Mary Dymond from Walcot (Bath) married a Thomas Curry at North Curry in Aug 1822. Could that be her? (A Thomas Curry aged 28 died there in March 1823.)

According to the passenger list she was 36

Interestingly there is a Mary Ann Dimond on board too (age 22).
