Okay found it.  I see that he does have a name change and there is a date 16.1.56 which is probably when it was noted, in theory by the NHS as they had access to the 1939 from 1948 onwards.

Words at the end look like - retired 12 years (unreadable) then service?  ARP rescue ......

ARP would have been Air Raid Precautions.

The birth record that I gave you at Reply#12 could well be his birth. The only way you will know for sure is to obtain that certificate.  Cost £7 as a pdf.  If his father is Richard O(wen) then probably the right one and also if the birth date is the same as on 1939 that would be an added confirmation.

I never realised you could buy them as a PDF.
Going to order it and see what it says. The name John was used on 2 documents that I have. His marriage certificate with just John and on my dad's baptism as David John. Everywhere else he used David but apparently was know as Dai.

Do let us know what it says on the birth cert.  It would be interesting to see if the speculation has been correct.

The pdf didn't match however a lovely dna match helped with the hunt and also ordered a pdf. We have his details as David Davies b 10 Sept 1890 Rhos.
Unmarried mum Elizabeth Ann Davies who a couple of years later married Richard Evans.
Can't believe I now have proof, been a long time coming.
Thanks again for all your help.
Also cant find him in any census as yet so off to have a nosey
