Help - local knowledge needed re brick wall
« on: Tuesday 30 March 21 21:37 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone with local knowledge can help re internal migration in 18th century Lincolnshire

I've succesfully managed to track back my mothers side to the marriage of John Dickinson and Fanny Bainbridge in Newton on Trent 1756. I've found Fanny (b1733) but struggled to find John.

Other "related" trees on Ancestry have claimed to find John Dickinson in Wrawby (b1724), but with no documented source evidence other than they themselves found info in another Ancestry Tree (again no evidence)

I've started to list all John Dickinsons (and variations) circa that era, and found one I think more a match, b1727 in Nettleham. All later family lines have been in Newton on Trent, Saxilby and Reepham so all closely bordering parishes, before moving north to Yorkshire

Can any locals advise me on which they think the likelier, but also any info on why families moved around Lincolnshire between 1700-1850?

Cheers
Benn (Yorkshire), Cock (Ashill, Norfolk), Dickinson (Newton on Trent and Saxilby, Lincolnshire)  Rhodes (Yorkshire), Tew (Shropshire/Staffordshire), Wilks (Yorkshire)

Free Reg has their marriage at Newton on Trent. A little more info on the details you may not have.
https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5f3e0ee8f493fd77511797a0/fanny-banebridge-john-dickenson-marriage-lincolnshire-newton-on-trent-1756-11-09?locale=en

The baptism at Wrawby you mention. https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5f3e0ee8f493fd77511797a0/fanny-banebridge-john-dickenson-marriage-lincolnshire-newton-on-trent-1756-11-09?locale=en

Newton on Trent is 35 miles from Wrawby. A fair distance. Have you looked over the river into Nottinghamshire? I checked NFHS for baptisms are there are very few in the time frame. The nearest being Askham ( 7 miles) John son of Joshua bap 22 Aug 1727.
There is also a baptism at North Clifton (3.3. miles from Newton) 17 Jul 1715 John son of William abode South Clifton.
AREA, Nottinghamshire. Lincolnshire. Staffordshire. Leicestershire, Morayshire.
Paternal Line--An(t)(c)liff(e).Faulkner. Mayfield. Cant. Davison. Caunt. Trigg. Rawding. Buttery. Rayworth. Pepper. Otter. Whitworth. Gray. Calder. Laing.Wink. Wright. Jackson. Taylor.

Could Joh have beeen a bit older than Fanny? There is this baptism at South Hykeham, not far (just Googled 11 miles)

I would also consider the Askham one.

I note the marriage you mention on freereg, it contains extra info. which you may already know?

Witness1   John HOWARD
Witness2   Christopher FOTTIT
Notes   Spelling for brides surname as entered by Vicar, bride signed Bainebridge. Date of 1756 likely to be a mistake as follows several entries dated 1758.

Also on freereg, the burial below but nothing else.

Fanny DICKINSON   Burial   04 Oct 1820   Lincolnshire   Newton on Trent : St Peter

I note 3 records for their children on family search, Jane 1758, John 1762, George 1775, do you know of any others?

As Fanny’s mother is Jane it may be that if they followed the English naming Pattern, John’s father may be John if he is the eldest son?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thanks for that, it did make me smile/laugh

It's what really frustrates me about Ancestry, people find a name and date that suits them, and take it as fact, then others copy, and always with no evidence
