Copping family tree: Ely/Cottenham
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 17:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Wonder if anyone else is looking at the COPPING family?

I have a Samuel Francis Copping born c 1885 in Cornwall for whom I can’t find any birth record.

On his marriage he lists his father as Samuel Copping, a captain in the merchant navy.

I have found a Samuel born 1855 in Cottenham, who served in the navy and was, in 1881, second captain.

I can’t find a record of him subsequently.

Grateful for info if anyone has any links to this surname.

Thanks

Samuel jnr is on the 1939 register plus full birthdate if he's the one married Edith Plomer in 1914

How do you know he was born in Cornwall?  There is one entry with that birthplace on the 1911 but not on the 1891 or 1901

Thanks - because of his pre war military records, which state date of birth and name his mother. He says he was born in Hayle, Cornwall and she was from that county

Hi, she was Cecelia Boswell who married Henry Crowley soon after Samuel’s birth. Henry is always referred to as stepfather.

On Samuel Francis’s marriage certificate, he names Samuel Copping, captain in the merchant service, as his father.

Hi.....

I thought that if his mother could be easily followed we could track back.....however...

Sisly/ Cecelia/Cisley.....all appear to cover her....possible as Charlotte Boswell b 1867 Chasewater Cornwall. A family tree has her as part of this family but she disappears....the family seen to be shown in the Channel islands in 1881.
The have ascribed her death to Charlotte Crowley who died in 1947 Rochford reg district.

What if you have it was her marriage date to Henry....I know it's not any closer to Samuel senior but need to place mum to close the gap.
thanks

Hi, in the 1911 census, Henry and Cecelia say they have been married for 24 years, so since 1887 approx.

I can’t find a marriage certificate.

Samuel was born Feb 1885.

He clearly knew his mother/stepfather from his military papers on discharge where he names mother and knows where they are.

His marriage certificate in 1914 names Samuel senior as the Captain in Merchant service.

I have found a Samuel in RN, who is my candidate for the father but no proof yet beyond he fits the dates, navy/merchant serv

Cecelia’s family were Romany, which may explain why they bob in and out of official records. Can’t find a birth for Samuel Francis or later marriage for Cecelia and Henry.

Thanks again

It certainly is strange. In 1911 they have a son Henry aged 15 born Redruth, yet the only Henry Crowley born in Redruth in 1896 has a mother's maiden name of "SMALL", but no Crowley/Small
marriages either to be found.
