My suspicion is that father was a lay preacher and that the son has, as you say, used a bit of 'poetic licence'. But that's only my personal suspicion  :-\

I had a look in the newspapers of the time to see if I could find anything, but nothing stood out.

It will be interesting to see if his occupation was on the death certificate, also the date of death would be useful to know, because it might help pin down an announcement in a newspaper.

Thanks for the info! Even though it's ended up being a bit of a dead end this will save me hours of researching in the wrong place.

If I find anything interesting on his birth or death certificates I'll let you know!

This site lists Wesleyan Methodist Ministers ie those who had been ordained.
I can’t see your man on there.

He doesn't appear to have been a Methodist from birth. He was baptised 25 Feb 1846 in St Mewan parish church along with two sisters

His marriage was in a parish church as well, not all details completed by cleric   ::)

and buried in St Mewan churchyard

Thank you! These are great. I hadn't been able to find the actual parish records so I really appreciate being able to finally see them!

I'm hoping I'll be able to get some more information about his parents when his birth certificate gets here. "William and Mary Hoskin" weren't exactly a uniquely named couple in 1800s Cornwall  ;D

some, but not all, parish records are available via FamilySearch

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nfa/

Use the opc database to search for the date of an event, then you can look for the parish entry

https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/person-search/

Possible birth reg for sister Elizabeth Ann Hoskin march qtr 1840 St Austell gives mmn of Hulls, so possible marriage 9 Feb 1833 in St Austell for William Hoskin & Mary Halls
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01qhr/

William Sidney's date of birth noted on baptism as 26 July 1837. Civil registration started on 1 July 1837 so his birth may not be registered.

Census entries for Mary show her place of birth as St Stephen (in Brannel)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG2G-7Z6

So likely baptism 5 Aug 1811 in St Stephen for Mary daughter of Jacob & Ann Halls, date of birth 4 Nov 1810.

Mary on the 1891 census with daughter Mary Ann who married William May

Thanks so much for all that information. I'm really interested to see what comes back on his birth and death certificate to see if it verifies that the info here is correct. I had found some of that information already, but you've brought in a few extra sources that corroborate which is positive.

I've done some more searching today and found two newspaper snippets. One which appears to confirm the birth of William Sydney's son Sydney (who would be my great great grandfather - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/74845414/), and another which mentions a Reverend William Hoskin in St Austell in 1850 (https://www.newspapers.com/clip/74966338/). He's unlikely to be a member of my direct family but I thought it was interesting nonetheless. Does anyone know if the letters B.A. after his name refer to a Bachelor's degree, or is that referring to something else altogether?

As a side point, before I found out I was wasting time searching in the Wesleyan Methodist Church's archives, I'd already purchased accesss to one of the Wesleyan Periodical collections with the British Online Archive, so if anyone would like anything looked up there over the next month while I have access I'd be happy to do so. It's this collection in particular that I have access to for the next 30 days: https://microform.digital/boa/collections/3/wesleyan-and-primitive-methodist-periodicals-1744-1960

Thanks everyone for your help so far, it's much appreciated!

You might plough through the online Minutes of the Methodist Conference listed here:-
http://www.methodistheritage.org.uk/research-online-books-minutes-of-conference.htm

Nowadays, I'd expect him to be listed in every volume during his active period with an obituary in the year following his death, but maybe there were too many lay preachers in his day.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.
