John Crawley - possibly from the Dundalk area.
« on: Monday 05 April 21 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I've reached a brick wall on this one and wondered if anyone could suggest anything to help.

What I have so far. John Crawley (Crowley) was married to Julia Morgan in April 1891 in Liverpool. They're both on the 1891 census and he's 29 on that. They get married in April 1891 shortly after the census and the marriage certificate says his father was Thomas, deceased and was a farmer. John is 29 on this so born in approx 1862 and he's listed as a mariner.

1901 census says he's 36 (so born approx 1865), a dock labourer and born in Ireland (I think Dundalk but not 100% - Julia is from Louth).

I think he dies in Jan 1904 (buried on 28 Jan 1904 and stated as 40 then so born 1864/5. He's dead by the 1911 census). Julia has a baby on 29 Jan 1904 as well who is also called John - this confused me for a while when looking and beggar's belief when I actually think about it.

I've looked on the Irish genealogy site and can only see two John Crawleys (various spellings) with fathers called Thomas - one in Kilrush and one in Clonakilty, which don't seem like the right areas to me. If he was born before 1865, I don't think he'll be listed here anyway.

So, I'm now stuck. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone else?

Thanks

Civil registration of births in Ireland began in 1864 so there's a good chance he was born before registration. In that case you could start looking for church records. If he was baptised in a Catholic church the register might be online (free)- https://registers.nli.ie/
Dundalk is here- https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0216
He may also have been born a bit farther out of the parish (he may merely have given his birthplace as Dundalk as an English census enumerator was unlikely to know villages and townlands in Ireland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for that. I've had a good look at 1860 to 1865 and can't find him :( but did see a potential sibling so that may be a route to look down.

Oh, wow, yes that looks like it could well be him. Thank you! I see he was also on the Irish Chieftain. Bernard Morgan was washed overboard from that boat in 1879. That Bernard would be John's wife's uncle.

I see there's another Morgan thread in the Louth section https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=846979.0

John Crawley was married to Julia Morgan mentioned there. Henry Morgan was her father and the b.1812 Bernard Morgan was Henry's brother (I think but am fairly sure). And thanks for the George possibility - gives me something to look into.
