I realise this is a long shot but if anyone has knowledge of this farmer I should be glad to hear of it. I am interested in Gavin Fowlie who was working on the farm as a ten year old ag lab in 1841 but went on to become an expert on horse and cattle breeding. I would like to know where/how he acquired his expertise. Maddeningly I can't find Gavin anywhere in the 1851 census and by 1861 he'd already become a farm grieve with four employees! I know that Aberdeenshire was very much in the vanguard of developing better strains of cattle at this time but nothing I can link to Gavin as yet.

Many thanks as always.

Just to say I have now found Gavin in the 1851 census -- under 'Foulie'. Well, that was not difficult, should have thought of it sooner!

Alexander Keith appears at Netherthird in the 1851 census, where he is described as farmer of 500 acres and 100 acres of woodland. Perhaps this was not all at Netherthird, as he also occupied the neighbouring farm of Thornybank, and perhaps others. He was dead by 17th March 1852, when an advertisement asks for any claims against him.

The Aberdeen Journal of 14th August 1839 lists prize winners at the Garioch Farmer Club show held on 2nd August. AK wins prizes for best mare and foal, 2nd best horned cow, 2nd best 2 year old horned quey, and best horned bull of the Aberdeenshire breed. At the Banffshire Farmer Club show held on 6th August, AK won the prize for best bull.

He is mentioned like this in the newspapers a number of times over the years.

Yes, I have Fowlie's in Aberdeenshire in my family, too. I have seen it recorded Fowlis, Fowler, Foulie, Fowwlie...still coming across different spellings as I further peruse the KS records.
