HELP!! With which family to follow?!?!
« on: Wednesday 14 April 21 18:04 BST (UK) »
Reposting as the last thread fizzled out with no responses :)

The last 100% known relative I can prove linkable to myself is William Lillystone.

Records I have for him are:

- A death in 1899
- A marriage to Adeline Murray in 1865 with father listed as Thomas Lillystone
- Census record for 1841 shows parents as Thomas and Rebecca Lillystone
- Census record for 1871 and 1891 for William Lillystone with Adeline Lillystone

I also have records including:

- a death record for possible father Thomas Lillystone 1854
- a death record for possible mother Rebecca Lillystone in 1843

I am unable to find a birth record. Census records for 1851, 1861, and 1881 and I am unable to find a marriage for William's parents or any other information around them.

I have found other possible routes the records would point me but they don't match entirely to information from the records already gained from William.

Note - the surname Lillystone has been found in many variations and has changed over the years from what it was to what I now have so good luck  :D

So specifics I am looking for help with -

 - I am looking for a birth on William Lillystone. I have the death and census's that state age and circa birth.

- I am looking for the 1851 census that shows William Lillystone. The military information provided here by people is reason for him not showing in the 1861 census but I am unable to find the 1851 census with him in either.

- I am looking for William Lillystone's parents. According to the marriage certificate for William and Adeline the father for William is Thomas Lillystone.
According to the 1841 census when William was a child he was living with parents Thomas and Rebecca Lillystone.
I am unable to find a marriage for Thomas and Rebecca.

- I have a death for a Rebecca Lillystone that gives a birth estimate of 1799 which is 15 years after the birth estimate for Thomas Lillystone. I do not have an official birth for her either.

- The only births I can find for a Thomas Lillystone come from 1776 and 1780, which don't match up with the age of death on GRO. These also appear to be the same births to the same parents with different dates on them. All other information matches. (These births are posted at the end of the post)

- Lastly, now I am going back pre 1837 is there any tips people could give me to help a beginner :)

Thank you so much for any help that comes this way, following is all the information I already have. Hopefully this helps. Please ask if more is needed or anything!!

Adam Lillyston

It possibly was not answered as your post was long, lots of it being copy/pasted on here.  You may get a better response by making the post more concise.    :)

I would look at it but am about to finish on here today

as mentioned on the other thread
1851 Census
possible sister Rebecca is a servant in Mile End Old Town, Stepney.says she was born in Stepney, Middlesex, England

---------
also 1851
is this his sister or a different Lillystone in Norfolk:
Eliza Lillystone, 20, [Lilliptone, according to ancestry], a dairymaid in Blofield, Norfolk, England. says she was born in Blofield
at 9 Church Road, in the household of Robert Goulder, "landed proprietor farming 340 acres" etc.

---------
if it is his sister, does that help you look for Wm's birth?

---------
That burial record of Thomas Lillystone, 10 Dec 1854, Stepney, age 68, at Ely Place, Bethnal Green, is non-conformist, at least according to ancestry. Image of cover of book says Non-parochial. ancestry says "Wesleyan."

Take a longer look at the images than I did and verify this and it might help people steer you in the right direction for William's birth and his parents' marriage.

You have mentioned a military record
Ancestry - Fold3 (pay site) shows
Pension admission
William Lillyston 26 yrs
Birthplace, Stepney, Middlesex
Pension Admission or Examination Date:19th November 1861
Regiment:   2nd Dragoons
Rank:Private

A similar entry for Service record

Find my Past index shows a similar service record.

There are published trees which show Thomas Lillystone and Jane Sunderland as spouses.
There is a marriage 1817 for this couple. Jane is a widow and Thomas is a Carter by occupation.
St James Paddington.

There is a birth - GRO
Mary Ann Lillystone 1837 Stepney with mmn Hogden.
Presumably this would be Rebecca.

I have to agree, copying & pasting huge chunks from Ancestry etc isn’t helpful and simply puts people off.  Far better to manually type out just the relevant bits - and you won’t fall foul of copyright that way either.

FindMyPast has a note of an 1824 Poor Law Examination  at Westminster, St Martin-In-The-Fields for Thomas Lillystone aged 28 38 (born c1788).  There is no image, but the original is held at the City of Westminster Archives.  A wife Jane is mentioned, aged 40, and there are various workhouse records for her on Ancestry.

As already mentioned, Thomas Lillystone married a widow named Jane Sunderland in 1817, Paddington.  I wonder if this is her:

1841 - Woodbridge Union Workhouse, Suffolk, Jane Lillingston aged 60.
1851 - Suffolk Lunatic Asylum (Woodbridge), Jane Lillingstone aged 64, Soldiers Wife

I can't see her in 1861 but it looks like her death was registered in Q2 1862, Woodbridge Registration District.

If Thomas was still legally married to Jane then it explains the lack of marriage to Rebecca.

ADDED: The Workhouse records have her date of birth as varying between c1780-1786, and on one it says her settlement is Kirton, Suffolk, and that her husband is in receipt of a pension.  She was apparently notorious for disorderly conduct.
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Assuming Thomas was legally married to the Jane Lillingston(e) in the workhouse/asylum, whose husband was a soldier with a pension, then FindMyPast have some likely records for him, as Lillystone.  There are also campaign medals on Ancestry.

As far as I can make out, he attested into the Royal Horse Artillery in 1803 or 1805 & discharged & admitted to pension 1818 due to a rupture.  Born Falkingham (sic), Suffolk, and a Carpenter by trade, which isn’t hugely dissimilar to Sawyer, as per William’s marriage certificate.

ADDED: I think it must be him, as there is a pension return which confirms his regiment and the date admitted to pension, and gives his date of death as 26 Nov 1854 aged 68.

Just to add that Rebecca Jr died at the workhouse at Wapping and was buried 24 Aug 1853, aged 21.  Burial transcribed as Lilithstone.
