Alexanderina Sutherland 1847-Lairg
« on: Thursday 15 April 21 05:05 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find my many times great grandmothers on Scotland people and I’m not having any luck.

She was born to Donald Sutherland and isabel (Isabella) Gordon in Lairg in 1847? I have her listed as Lexy Sutherland in the 1851 census with her dad Donald. No record of Isabella in that census but has Donald listed as a widow. I also can’t seem to find Isabel death records.

I seem to have hit a brick wall. I can find most of the kids on SP but not this one. Is there anywhere else to look? Or would someone be willing to help me find it. I’ll use my credits but I can’t find anything.
I only know of her name cause I dug out the record of her child’s birth in 1867. That records has her parents down. As the above names but no record of birth. All the other kids are there though so I’m so confused.

Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I can see 8 children born to this couple between 1826 and 1841, but no Alexandrina.
There is a burial for an Isobel SUtherland in Lairg in Jan 1841 to consider.
Do you have the family on the 1841 census?
I cannot see an Isabel Sutherland in the 1841 census for Lairg.

This whole thing is very confusing. To me it looks like Isabel passed between the 1841 census and the 1851. She is in the 1841 census under Isabella Gerdon in Lairg. at Culmaly.

Donald Sutherland   40
Isabella Gerdon 35
Elspet Sutherland 14
Gorgersa Sutherland 10
John Sutherland 7
William Sutherland 5
Donald Sutherland 2

They have a daughter named Elizabeth Sutherland. who was born in 1828, so maybe the child is hers? In the census it looks like she lived with Donald for a bit and then moved in with Elizabeth and her husband Hugh MacDonald for the 1861 census and is listed as a servant. She then had her own baby in 1867 and was married to David Sinclair in 1872.

I can't find any information on Donald family, that would be my next step, but records seem a little dodgy in this time frame.

The coverage for burials in Lairg seems to stop at 1844.
I wonder if Isabella died giving birth to Alexandrina, and she either wasn't baptised or the record of it is lost.

Do you have Alexandrina's marriage record? It should give parents names.

Seems like Donald Sutherland is still at the same address in 1881 census as he was in 1841. Daughter Margaret is with him.

Yes on the marriage license it lists the parents as Donald Sutherland (Farmer) and Isabella Sutherland MS Gordon. Witness Donald Sutherland and James Sinclair.
I found it odd that I couldn't find her birth certificate or mothers death certificate anywhere. Maybe they were connected.
Oh fantastic I hadn't found him in the 1881 census.
I really appreciate you taking the time to try and make sense of my family mess. Thank you

The census indicates Donald was born in Lairg about 1800-01. I can find only 2 possibilities in the parish records. I think the mostly likely is with father Jo. Sutherland.
I suspect Donald's death is in 1882 in Lairg age 81. The other Donald S. in 1887 I suspect is the son of Andrew Sutherland and Effy MacDonald.
His death cert should confirm wife's name and may give parents.
