Diary > Saturday 24th April
« on: Saturday 24 April 21 22:30 BST (UK) »
It had been very late when I got to sleep so felt tired this morning. Got myself out for a walk, late morning as usual. All of the rubbish that had been left in the hollow in the woods had gone, I really hope there isn't a fresh lot on Sunday but I think it's quite likely that there will be.
Had a walk over the bridge, could see the sea was blue today. Came back across the railway track. Only came across a couple of joggers and two dogwalkers, all of those cyclists, runners etc must have gone back to the gym or maybe it was a fad that didn't last.

In the afternoon I did something I hadn't done for more than a year- I went in a shop! Had psyched myself up to go to Sainsburys Local and buy a newspaper, just as a starting off point. Timed it for when I thought it wouldn't be busy, my friend had told me what the setup is in there but I did feel a bit anxious.  There were only two other people in there, one a kindly old gent who let me go before him. Perhaps I looked terrified behind my mask! It seems a bit pathetic for me to make a big thing of this when people have been doing it for months but it was a small step towards getting my confidence back and I'm pleased I did it.

Drove around onto the bypass to give the car another blast, then as I was round that way I turned off to the nurseries, bought two bags of topsoil that I'd been intending to get, also a couple more trailing pansies. Also a tomato plant. I was once given a couple to grow on the patio but they were a bit of a nuisance to me, they produced some tomatoes despite me. Thought I'd have a go with one, it didn't cost much so no great loss if it doesn't survive. Have put it in the garage overnight as I don't have a greenhouse or cold frame. I don't usually go to the nurseries at weekends, even in normal times but it wasn't as busy as when I went during the week. When I got home I found that I'd forgotten to lock the front door, must have been because I was edgy.

Did some gardening and sat reading for a while, the sun was out although it was cooler than yesterday. Spag bol for tea, had a very large glass of wine, could have gone off to sleep, I'm definitely a cheap date these days. Watched Line of Duty, I'm up to date with it now, only two more episodes to go.

Good to hear you’ve plucked up your courage to venture into your local for a newspaper... but you’ve been to the nursery so perhaps you’ve already done the shop bit without thinking about it! Hope your tomato plant bears fruit for you... ours growing nicely in the shed after being started off on the bathroom window sill!
A glass or two of 🍷🍷never does anyone any harm! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it although I’m 🥂 not 🍷!

Today I woke quite early but read my book... it’s Richard Osmans - The Thursday Murder Club... picked by one of our book group... it’s quite humorous in a quirky way but I’m enjoying  reading it... bit of a change from the first of a trilogy by Elizabeth Chadwick about Eleanor of Aquitaine which I’ve enjoyed too!
Well having had a day off yesterday we set too got all the stuff out to finish off the last lot of branch clearing down near the new fencing and the other just in front of the beech hedge where his 50ft Ash tree is spreading its branches at least 10 ft into our garden... some far too high for OH to reach and one branch literally holding up a dead yew tree that’s covered in ivy!
We noticed in the top of the arch of the beech hedge a birds nest belonging to a pair of gold finch first time they’ve made a nest there... lovely to see ...
we worked until early afternoon when we had a late lunch... time for a rest and enjoy the sunshine...
Message from friend now in hospital... got to get his white count down to below 20 with meds then bone marrow biopsy on Monday...once count down start chemo to kill cancer in bone marrow... in for the long haul told he’ll be in hospital till late May... real bummer for him... his 70th in mid May and they were going to have a couple of nights away to celebrate... life’s so unfair when his fathers going to turn 103 in a months time!
Late afternoon we took another 8 bags to recycle fortunately empty so in and out quickly... OH went back with another load while I cleared tools away, took down his tower for him and swept little patio by the new fence... another patio MH making three we’ve got! 😂😂...
OH was very surprised I’d managed to dismantle his tower on my own... brownie points I think!
We’ve discovered that our magnolia tree in the front garden has been attached by the muntjac who have stripped the bark if all three trunks... it looks dreadful and probably won’t have done the tree much good... we found some plastic mesh and put it round the trunk and staked it so it’s away from the trunks and hopefully they won’t be able to get at it any longer... not content with eating my tulips they want the tree too!
Dinner was cooked by OH usual steak and trimmings then collapsed in front of tv...
Early night.... looking forward to doing something other that chopping up branches tomorrow!

Another nice day, tried to start sorting the wee one's clothes but she had grown out of a lot of the weather appropriate ones and she had her room such a mess it took a while.  So I popped to Tesco to get her at least one outfit.  It reminded me of why I started getting deliveries and avoiding the shops.  Started off by managing to offend a lady.  She was doing a big shop and something had fallen out of her trolley.  I didn't want to cause issues by ignoring social distancing so said "excuse me, you've dropped something" and she told me to mind my own in a way slightly more rude than I can say here.   Other people were ignoring people's personal space left right and centre.  When I got to the till, paid and went to leave there was a woman standing so close i nearly tripped over her when I turned away from the till.  Like so close I'd consider it rude for any time.

Lovely to read all that; not pleasant experience for you Pharma, but I only go before 08:00 a.m. to avoid people, and I do make a point of trying not to touch more stock than I have to.
I do think Roobarb, that the large supermarkets these days, at quiet times should be fairly low risk as they are really enormous warehouses, and though we rarely look up, the ceiling space is cavernous. Plenty of room for air exchange?
Desperate news about your friend Caroline, and fingers crossed the marvellous health system can get him right again.
Somewhat jealous of your goldfinches nesting, though I don't think I could stand the hassle of a garden big enough to accommodate three patios!!  ::)
Yesterday was very sunny here and the wind slightly less cold, so we decided to have an away day, and drove about 20 miles to a small town situated on a tidal estuary, where H has an ancestor who was baptised the same day her parents were married in 1697. She was transported across the Atlantic at the age of 42, and I know she arrived, but can only speculate what happened to her after that.
It's a very pretty place, with an ancient butterwalk, and we explored more outside the town than we have done previously, as the main street is narrow and was busy as you might expect on a Saturday morning. H procured a hot pasty straight out of the oven for his lunch, and we found a slab of frittata for me which was very tasty.  The tide was gradually coming in, but very few wading birds in evidence on the mud flats.
A small cafe was open for a couple of hours, serving take way coffee, (and cake, though we didn't have any,) through a perspex screen across the entrance. We sat on a bench to enjoy the peace and sunshine, and had a brief chat with a young woman who had an Australian Kelpie dog. They are most unusual over here, but I recognised it as the same breed number 2 son has in Oz.
On the return, passing Totnes we were held up by a long, and very loud, cavalcade of motor bikes under police escort. I messaged number one son, who is a biker, to ask if he knew anything about it, which he didn't though he said police escort is unusual.
Some snooker, and a "Prime Suspect" later.

Caroline, the shop part of my local nurseries is just a counter at the far end of a barn!  ;D There are a few things like lawn feed on a shelf around the edge and a display of seeds but that's it. I suppose my visit to the petrol station has been more of a similar experience, they have a grocery area there. MH, it wasn't a big supermarket I visited, just one of those convenience stores so nowhere near as big. I'm sticking with the deliveries for my groceries.
What a rude person in your Tesco PharmaT, no need at all for that. Hope you managed to get some clothes for the little one.

Very sorry to hear about your friend Caroline, I hope his treatment goes well.
Another productive day in the garden for you, hopefully you'll be able to sit back and enjoy the results of your efforts. You'll be able to follow the sun around on your patios, very satisfying.

Your away day sounds lovely MH, there are so many pretty places in Devon. Not sure what a butterwalk is.  ???

A Butterwalk is a medieval covered walkway Roobarb. That sort of architecture really floats my boat.   ;D

Some people are so rude Pharma. Don’t take it to heart. She probably had a hard day and you were an easy target. There are just some things you really need to buy in person aren’t there?

Good to hear about everyone’s experiences venturing out in public. I feel quite exhausted after hearing about your garden activities Caroline. Time for a rest I think.  ;)

Thanks Ruskie, sounds like somewhere I would enjoy too.

I've enjoyed reading about everyone's exploits too, am working my way up to venturing a little further and to having a get together like jo1962 did, although hoping for warmer weather to do that! Gets quite hot in my garden but not everywhere is as sheltered.

Thanks MH, looks lovely. I'm sure I've seen something similar in a place I've visited but not sure where.
