Seeking the identity/origins of the William Lockyear who m. Ann Martin at Tavistock, 03 Mar 1815. This William was living in Tavistock at the time of the 1841 Census, age suggests a birth 1784, born in Devonshire.  He is likely the "William Lockyear alias Schearling" who died in 1850 in Tavistock, his age at death suggests a birth year of 1784.

He could be the William Lockyar who was baptized 31 Jan 1787 at Tavistock, son of William and Mary.

For what it's worth William and Ann had at least one child, Ann Martin Lockyear, who was baptized in a non-conformist ceremony 12 Dec 1831 at Tavistock. This daughter Ann was living with both parents in 1841 and then with her widowed mother Ann (Martin) Lockyear at the time of the 1851 Census.

The question remains about a possible surname of Schearling for this William.

A William LOCKYER married a Mary SHARLAND at Tavistock in 1786. Could be that SHARLAND was a variant of SCHEARLING or vice versa.

Thank you for this. What puzzles me is, assuming the William LOCKYAR who was baptized 31 Jan 1787 was the same person listed in this death record, why the alias?  My understanding is that an alias suggests a different name at birth, in the case of commoners most likely due to a single mother, etc.

It can relate to a bequest, but that seems unlikely given that he left his widow a pauper.

Have you thought about obtaining the 1850 death certificate to see who was the informant?

If William was born in 1784, and William LOCKYER married Mary SHARLAND at Tavistock in 1786, William jnr would  have been born Sharland. He could then have taken the Lockyer surname (including at the 1787 baptism) which some would consider an alias, at it wasn;t his birth surname.

Thank you. That pension record from 1817 might be applicable.
I’ll look into it.
