Looking for James Jackson in Rothesay.
« on: Tuesday 27 April 21 19:25 BST (UK) »
HI  to all my fellow members at RC.

I'm back on the trail of my elusive Irish rellies who do have a habit of wandering all over the place
been keeping busy during lockdown over here for our lovely virus pandemic.
I recently received an email from a fellow researcher in Texas.USA. who it turns out has an Irish rellie
married into mine so he asked for some data. I have gone back to Rothesay where I knew my Jackson family were  Stocking-Hosiery workers  I also bought a birth cert from SP. to confirm address so here is what I'm looking for in the missing dept. ???

George Jackson born 20 July 1855 Res; 6 Montague St Rothesay  Father James Jackson age 33yrs ??? James born Kill ??? writing soooo bad can't make it out  County of Sligo Ireland  Mother.
Susan Woodland  age 31yrs  born 7 April  1822  ??? married 1839 Cty.Sligo  james Jackson signed register 30 July 1855

My research has them with children  all born Sligo Ire.  Elizabeth 1842.John 1844.james 1845.
Mary 1847.Susan Woodland Jackson 1849.
George 1855 Rothesay Bute .Ann Jane 1857 Rothesay Isabella  10 Jan 1859 Rothesay deceased
early 1860.
I found the Jackson family on 1861 Census for Rothesay  at 87  Montague St  weavers to trade
wife Susan is now a widow so I've been looking everywhere for when James Jackson died .He was listed as a Military Soldier  Pensioner after birth of son George  so I'm wondering if he may have been in the Irish Regiment of Foot Soldiers  and later known as a Chelsea Pensioner.he appears to have died by 1861.Spouse Susan moved back to Bridgeton Glas  with the kids and 15th  Sept 1868 remarried a widower named John Pritchard  he born 1827 Irvine Ayrshire and had abt '8' kids.
they all lived at 49 Oswald St Bridgeton Glas. John also Weaver in cotton mills.

So can anyone help find when James Jackson died  ??? where is he buried  ??? I can't find him on SP. either  ::) appreciate all your help as always thanks a bunch. : :)

Kind regards;

Janey. ;)

Have you ruled out the James Jackson who died in Rothesay in 1858, aged 40?

ScotlandsPeople also shows the deaths of three children (mother's maiden name listed as Woodland/Woodlands):

Margaret d 1855, aged 1
un-named child d 1860, no age given in index
Isabella d 1860, no age given in index

How do you see Susan JACKSON nee WOODLAND to be described as a widow, Census 1861?

"...had abt '8' kids."     I am reading this to mean that your Susan, b. ~ 1821, married John PRITCHARD, 1868......and this couple had several children?  Is that correct?

Looking at Census I cant see they had any children (John and Susan Pritchard that is)

There is a William Pritchard born 1864** described as a Son in 1871 but he may be the child of John and his 1st Wife.

1871 we have;
John Erstchard   44   Head
Susan Erstchard 49   Wife
Robt Erstchard 20   Son
David Erstchard 14   Son
Wm Erstchard 7   Son
George Jackson 14   Stepson
Enn Jane Jackson 13   Daughter
Wm Woodland 86   Father-in-law

1881
John Pritchard   55   Head
Susan Pritchard 60   Wife
William Pritchard 17   Son
Susan Jackson 30 Daughter-in-law
Susan Jackson 10 Grandmother In Law (likely Grand Daug in Law***)
Jane McDowell 22 Daughter (Johns Daug Jean in earlier Census)
John McDowell 2 Grandson
Samuel McDowell 7 Mo Grandson

EDIT yes looks correct.

birth:18 December 1863 Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland
WILLIAM Pritchard, Parents John Pritchard/Elizabeth Montgomerie
(F/S.Org)

Trish :)

HI; :)

In answer to    GR2.WIVENHOE.TRISH 1120. I have Irish rellies who married into the Irish Jackson family in Bridgeton Glasgow.  in 1866 named John & Margaret Hedivan Jackson.John  a shoemaker
Margaret died in 1876 they had about '5' kids ???  John remarried .end of story.

John's parents are James & Susan Woodland Jackson living at 6 Montague St Rothesay Bute. they had abt; 8 kids in total some born in County Sligo Ireland where they married in 1839. James Jackson possible born date  ???  Kilvarnet.  Susan Woodland age 31yrs born 7 April 1820. ??? born  Ballisodare Sligo her parents William & Elizabeth (Rebecca) Lang Woodland.  James parents unknown.

Now to find 1861 Census for Jackson family at 87 Montague St Rothesay I have  abt; 6kids  of which four of them born Ireland .two born Rothesay. also listed is Susan  Woodland Jackson and her Father William Woodland  age 70yrs  Occ; Stocking Hosier worker.

What I am missing is  spouse James Jackson  ??? where and when did he die  ??? can't find him on SP. ??? Susan W.Jackson turns up in Bridgeton  Glasgow married to John Pritchard  (widower)  in
Sept 1868. John Pritchard born Irvine Ayrshire  Occ; cotton mill worker. the Jackson and Pritchard families all lived at 39--49 Oswald St Bridgeton Glasgow

I bought a birth cert. from SP. for a son George Jackson born 20 July 1855   Res; 6 Montague St Rothesay Bute. register signed by father James Jackson  30 July 1855. Occ; Military Soldier Pensioner  says he is age 33yrs  . ???

One last note while browsing SP. I found a bunch of Illegitimate children born to a  Jane Woodland  ???  also a son named George Woodland born to mother Catherine, could they be sisters of our Susan ???   I did also found a Jane Woodland married to William Hopewell where they apply for poor relief seems William  a Hosier worker had an accident and lost a Rt.Hand. this family are also living and working in Rothesay in 1861 Cen who are they. ???

If anyone can figure all this out I will be eternally grateful thank you. ::)

Kind regards
Janey :)

You have not said whether or not you have looked at the 1858 death certificate suggested by GR2 in Reply #1 above?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

HI;

Thank you for the reminder I went back to SP for another look as I did not see the James age 40 who died  1858 but there was one other with a mother's maiden name of young  I din't look as was unknown to me. so now I have bought the death cert and it is my James  ;D

James Jackson died 11 June 1860  at 87 Montague St Rothesay. of Typhoid Pneumonia for 12days.
WOW. pretty bad.eh. ??? his father John  occ; Shoemaker  mother  Mary Young both are deceased.
Interesting witness is William Hopewell his daughter's brother-in-law with his X mark address 6 Montague St  Rothesay.

Interesting also says James buried at Rothesay Burial Ground as certified by James NcNeil. Would anyone know where this burial ground is located in Rothesay ???

Appreciate very much all your help thank you.

Kind regards
