1841 or 51 in Sunderland please - Orwin
« on: Monday 29 August 05 18:52 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birthplace of one of my ancestors.  She was born in Berwickshire and married a Wilson Orwin in Sunderland and brought up her family there.

In the 1861 census there is a place name in Berwickshire which is made illegible by a transcriber's mark and I would appreciate it if anyone could help me with a full location on either of the earlier censuses.

Her name is Alice / Alison Orwin - she was christened I believe Alice Telford, but is called Alison in the 1861 census.  Born about 1813.

In 1861 she is resident in South Durham Street.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Ash,

Let's hope Beth will provide good info.

In the meantime..............

On C1861 ( ref 2396-138-56) the birth place of Alice/Alison/Allison is as you know somewhere in Berwickshire.

The enumerator's boss has obliterated the place with his
( no women until 1891) " X" , as was done with every birth place outside the county.

Using the GenUKI web site, to peruse all the parishes in Berwickshire, you might spot a candidate. To my less than average eyes, might the place be AYTON (The Ancestry modern transcriber thought it was PETER ? )

Trivia Angle.... Alison just means little Alice.

C1841 ref.. Piece 309 Book 3 Folio 11 Page 17

C1851 ref. Piece 2396 folio 138 Page 56.

Hello Michael,

(Pels you are quoting Ancestry numbers, which sometimes co-incide with the "official" numbers, but not always.... you little monkey ! )

Pedantic Mick Dixon

There is nothing at all wrong with being pedantic!

You certainly gave me food for thought because I have always
written the Ancestry details along with the ref. number.
Ha - not any more though, I wondered where everyone else found the "folio number" and by jove I think I've got it!!
On my next post have a look, see if it is correct and marks out
of 10 please  ;)

Seriously, thanks very much for this. Life, they say is a learning
curve and all help is very much appreciated!

Pels  :) :)

Pels,

Pedantic Mick could get pedantic with Michael... I should have called you a " little chimp" rather than monkey.

I will give you 10/10 for taking my comments well.

Leaving aside C1841 which has the added complications of having a "book" number ... the other censuses have the "piece" ( of land) number, like a postman's round, and each sheet of census names, front and back is called a "folio"
with "page" numbers on the front and on the back.

The page numbers are either on top left, top middle or top right of a page. The folio number is always ( i think) on top right and is usually "bonked" onto the page, the pages numbers are pre-printed.

some census indexes will just give a piece and folio number, with "a" or "b" after the folio number to indicate front or back
( Or "i" or " ii" )

And why do I know all this ?... cos I have made more mistakes than anybody else !

Hello again - "Oh Pedantic One"!

Could I firstly say sorry to Ash? - This won't happen again on
one of your posts - not from me anyway, you have my word!

Now I have got it!

I used "Ricky1", (an almighty being of the aristocratic breed) as a guinea pig, and yes, I finally understand!

Watch this space from now on - the wrong people might
continue to be found, but all the other information should be
spot on! No excuses after such excellent tuition!

Kind regards,

Pels  :)

Many thanks one and all!

It is over a year since I started this post and much has been achieved thanks to the 1841 census.

I knew Alison surname was Telford and guessed from the census that it was Ayton as her parish (spelled Aiton).  In that parish I could only find 2 Telford christenings for a Mary and Elizabeth with parents George and Alison.

It is all very complicated but by using a combo of the 1851 and 1841 and the church parish records I found the above Elizabeth and Mary with their married names - Mather and Keel) with Alice's eldest son living with them!!

For some reason George he father was marked as Joseph in the 1841.

I then went on to find that having had 4 daughters in Ayton, they then moved to Sunderland and had 4 sons.

But there is another mystery.

George was born Ayton in 1787 parents Matthew Telford and Bessie Nisbett.  They were married 1786 and there seems to be no other children.

I can't find a christening for Matthew although he is otp, but there is an earlier marriage for a Matthew (about 20 yrs earlier) with no children (unless they are non-conformists)

There must be a link.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the NC registers for Ayton???

Cheers
