FindMyPast Baptisms (transcription)
George Theophilus Challis, bap 27 Feb 1860, place -Rede, All Saints, parents John, a labourer and Caroline.
Born 27 Feb, private baptism, received 8 Apr

Private baptism is where the child is not expected to survive - probably carried out at home. If the child survives, he/she isn't "baptised" in church but "received".

Always wondered where the middle name came from ? was the family of Greek origin or did they just fancy a different middle name

Theophilus is a biblical name, it means 'friend of God'.
Probably used around the time that names like Zachariah and Hephzibah were popular.
