Military Details
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 00:28 BST (UK) »
Trying to find details of my father who served in WW2.  He was in the 8th Army Royal Engineers from 1939 and I believe he was a driver.  He served in North Africa and had the Africa Star and he landed in Normandy D Day plus 1.  He was mentioned in dispatches at some point but he would never speak about his time during WW2.  I would love to know why he was mentioned in dispatches.  My searches on line have so far not lead to anything.  His full name was Leonard Douglas Baker, born in Poplar 1918.

Service records for people serving after 1921 are still held by the MOD.

You can apply for your father’s records but there is a cost of £30. All the information is on the Government website, you can download the application forms.

There is an extremely long wait, exacerbated by Covid, family research has to come way behind their  work for serving personnel and veterans.
