Couple of words from bequests in a will 1857
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 05:56 BST (UK) »
I'd be grateful if someone could help out with a couple of words here.
Thomas is leaving a large amount of plate and glassware to, probably, his mistress.
At the end of lines 2 & 3-
...............................................also my two ??
decanters and one dozen of my best wine glasses six of my best ??
or tumblers one dozen jelley? glasses ...................

Many thanks

I think the first is:  French   [followed by line filler]

Agree with:  jelley

Who is the testator?  I'd like to see the second word in another image.

Thanks HD.
The testator is Thomas Trood, 1857, of 'St Thomas the Apostle' (which is Exeter), 'but formerly of Moorwenstow'.
Its a PCC will.

If you're going to take a look, could you possibly take a look at the line 2 lines above this?
It's the first page, about 3/4 of the way down.
Starts...... authorized by Law to do.......... Then I gave up!
Would you agree the lady's name is Mary Corham?

Many thanks

...authorized by Law to do for rents reserved on common leases for years I...

Comparing with examples of C and G on that page I do agree that Corham is Mary's surname.

The word for the tumblers continues to evade me.  It begins with r and probably ends with _ers (or maybe _ors).

There's a word - rummer - which fits in context.  I don't think it's exactly that but it may be a variant.

My thoughts too, though I'm not convinced that it's -mm- in the middle.

OED
rummer, n.
A type of large glass for alcoholic drinks, usually with a rounded shape and a short or heavy stem. Cf. roemer, n.

roemer, n.
A type of decorated German or Dutch wine glass, typically having a wide base and a long, ornamental knobbed or ‘prunted’ stem.
