Brick Wall - Lancashire Family but any ideas welcome Surname Wilson
« on: Tuesday 04 May 21 07:06 BST (UK) »
I have been stuck on this Lady for a LONG time to thought I'd throw it out for HELP

Emma Wilson was born circa 1855 in Manchester. (that's one sticking point the combination of Wilson and Manchester)

The next is she is NOT with her parent or parents(s) but her Grandmother.

Census 1861 Russell Street, Blackburn, Lancashire, England

James Fairbrother Head M 34 Lancaster Blackburn,
Jonathan Fairbrother Son M 4 Lancaster Blackburn,
Margaret Hull Stepdaughter F 14 Lancaster Stewarton, (HALL)
Jane Hull Stepdaughter F 11 Lancaster Stewarton,
Margaret William Mother In Law F 64 Lancaster Stewarton, *** Grandmother*** should read Wilson
Emma William Niece F 7 Lancaster Manchester,
Jane William Lodger F 36 Lancaster Stewarton,

Census 1871 Blackburn, Lancashire

Margt Wilson Head F 73 Lancaster, Lancashire
Jane Hall Granddaughter F 21 Lancaster, Lancashire
Emma Wilson Granddaughter F 17 Manchester, Lancashire
Jonathan Fairbrother Grandson M 14 Blackburn, Lancashire
Margt Harwood Granddaughter F 24 Lancaster, Lancashire
Elizth Harwood Granddaughter F 5 Blackburn, Lancashire
Mary Jane Harwood Granddaughter F 3 Blackburn, Lancashire
Aminda Harwood Granddaughter F 1 Blackburn, Lancashire

Margaret Wilson with husband William (who I haven't found on any census BUT he's a Mariner so possibly at sea) ALL the child bar one state Mariner / Shipwright the other states Musician.

The Children of Margaret are all baptised in Lancaster - Joseph b 1821 Elizabeth b 1825 (who possibly marries three times certainly twice) , James b 1828, Mary b 1832 and Jane b 1834.

I have thought of purchasing the marriage certificate for Emma - but if she is illegitimate (which I suspect, it won't help) and the Birth certificate could become costly.

I have managed to trace Joseph through the census records and he is the least likely but even Elizabeth is a likely contender!

I expect you know that Stewarton is probably a mistranscription for Skerton, not originally part of Lancaster borough but immediately north of the Lune, and that anyone born Skerton is likely to be given as born Lancaster in another census.

Still reading the rest.

St Mary Lancaster is the Priory Church. I've found it quite common for Skerton parents to baptise their children there, despite there being a C of E church in Skerton (St Luke's).

The conundrum requires more thought. If only Wilson were not such a maddeningly common name - in Lancs especially.

I've managed to follow Joseph - He marries a Bowker , and lives in Preston then later Blackburn.

and Elizabeth  ::) to a certain extent though whether two or three marriages , I am not sure! On the marriage her Father changes every time, which sometimes suggest she doesn't know but William Wilson was on her baptism records, and used on her first marriage the others also state single not widowed!  Though how she explained her Children - I have no idea.

Jane I lose when she comes to Blackburn, with her Mother and Sister.

James and Mary - just have baptisms.  :( not even a burial  :(

Like you I thought that Emma might be illegitimate but there is no such birth in the period in Manchester, Chorlton,Salford or Stockport.

MMNs are Tabiner (found) Turner Edge Hughes Boucher Thorn Kay and Hensham (GRO).
