Florence Riddell on 1939 Register
« on: Wednesday 05 May 21 18:04 BST (UK) »
Florence (Gertrude)  Riddell (nee McDonald) is living,Acton, Middlesex on the Register. Her date of birth is 12/11/1894 but written above it in black ink is "2/11/1881 ARA" Can anyone expound on what the ARA might stand for ? Incidentally no Florence McDonald is born those years.

Thanks
John

ARA is the Enumeration District code for St Marylebone.
It looks like an amendment was made to her date of birth, and the record for this originated at some time from St Marylebone.

Could she have been registered in the Jan-March quarter of 1882?

She married George Riddell in 1915.  Do you have a copy of the marriage cert showing her fathers name?

Freebmd has 2 Florence Gertrude McDonald births - Dec 1885 Lambeth & March 1892 West Ham

Florence Riddell's occupation in the 1939 register is given as "author, short stories". Mr Google suggests that the author Florence Riddell was born c1885 and died in 1960. The potted biography I saw also said that she lived "... in Kenya, Bombay, Calcutta, Bavaria, New York, and England", so perhaps she wasn't born in England.

Edit: A book available on archive.org ("Notable Women Authors of the Day") says that this Florence Riddell was born in Ireland as Florence Cowan. It doesn't mention that she married a McDonald, so perhaps it is not the same person. However I can't find a marriage of a Florence Cowan to a Riddell.

Edit again: Sorry, I'm stupid. The "Mrs Riddell" mentioned in Notable Women Authors of the Day was Charlotte Riddell.
Eva family in Devon and Cornwall.
Bowdidge family in Devon and Dorset.

Her entry in 1934 Authors and Writers Who's Who seems to be the source for  a London birth. And I see there is a Florence McDonald, no middle name, whose birth is registered in Marylebone the 1st quarter 1884, the only birth of the name recorded in the area which seems odd that the 1881 info on the Register was from Marylebone.

The place of birth has no relevance to the amendment made on the register.
The code AVA is that for Marylebone. This means that at some time after the register was originally compiled something to do with this person occurred in Marylebone which triggered an amendment to the register.

My mother in law was born in London. Many years after the register was compiled an amendment was made to her entry, complete with a Surrey code, denoting that the source of information for the amendment was in Surrey.

Here is the list of area codes https://www.findmypast.co.uk/articles/1939-register-enumeration-districts

John - what is her connection to your FH?  If you are descended from one of her children - where & when was that child born?

How did you determine she was nee McDonald from the 1939 entry?
