Hi I’m having trouble finding the wife of William Martin (born circa 1820/27 in Clavering Essex)

Williams family were carpenters in Clavering his father was Joseph Martin (born circa 1804) and Hannah Martin (born circa 1801)

William had a son Charles William Martin who was also born in Clavering in 1858.  According to Charles marriage certificate his father William lived in Loughborough Leicestershire at the time of his Marriage (16 June 1878).

I’ve tried looking for Essex and Leicestershire entries for a marriage certificate of Williams but can’t find anything ?   Ive looked back to the 1841 census but can’t find William living with the rest of his family in Clavering but he could have possibly left the area by then. ??? Could anyone more experienced help please.  It would be very much appreciated thank you.

Welcome to rootschat

Charles William Martin appears to have been born illegitimately

MARTIN, CHARLES  WILLIAM  (No mothers maiden surname on index)   -
1857  Dec Quarter in SAFFRON WALDEN  Volume 04A  Page 327

possibly the son of Lydia or Maria who are with Charles William in 1861

Thank you for your replies it’s seems that Charles William Martin was the illegitimate son of Lydia Martin if you tie it in with the baptism entry of similar dates, place etc with the mothers name as Lydia Martin.

What is confusing is that when Charles William marries in Loughborough 16 June 1878 to a woman called Elizabeth Riste the father of Charles William is listed on the marriage certificate as William Martin ????   Any ideas ????

It was not unusual for people to 'invent' fathers names and occupations when they married, particularly if they were illegitimate.

In 1871 Lydia is using the surname Barker, they are living with John Martin who was Lydias brother

Marriage Dec qtr 1861
Barker    Peter
Martin    Lydia
Pancras reg dist    1b   115
The marriage image is on Ancestry and confirms Lydias father is Joseph (deceased)

Thank you I hadn’t thought of that it would explain why I can’t find any record of a william Martin on any census either in Loughborough or Clavering!   I did see Lydia Barker on the later census thank you for finding out her marriage details.  It seems the family tree stops with Lydia then on that branch of my tree.  Thanks for helping me out I’m a novice at this.

In 1881 Lydia Barker is in a separate household next to Peter Barker, Mary Jane Barker and Peters mother Mary in Clavering.

I’ve just looked at the census from 1891 and I notice that along side Lydia Barker and Mary Jane Barker there is a peter Martin born in Loughborough in 1883 he’s listed as grandson.  I’m presuming he must be Charles Williams son with Eliza/Elizabeth Riste.  Maybe she died giving birth as that’s the year of her death.  Maybe that’s why he’s living with his grandmother Lydia ?  Struggling to find a record of his birth though
