McCann
« on: Friday 21 May 21 10:01 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me prove that George William McCann was the father of a James McCann.
James was born in 1887, I believe in Norfolk. He married a Selina e Rogers in 1932 in Erpington Norfolk. They had a daughter Joan M McCann who was born in 1935 Erpingham. Although I have found a family tree that shows George is his father and an Agnes Tungate is his mother I can find no  proof from census or bmd records. i would appreciate any help.

Have you got the marriage certificate?
Did James and Selina stay together?
Selina E. McCann/Selina E. Rogers married Walter Jeary, March qtr 1952, North Walsham

Death in North Walsham, October 1993
Selina Elizabeth Jeary
d-o-b 13 Oct 1904

James and Selina McCann and children can be found in the free index to the 1939 Register at 26 Fir Hill Cottage, Erpingham R.D.
More McCann-Rogers births during the war.

Another James McCann marriage in North Walsham, early in 1940, to Dorothy M. Farrow
Any connection between the two James?

Thisre is some duplication of Jonw post.

No GRO index for James in Norfolk, others elsewhere but not with the mothers maiden name mentioned.
How do you know he was born in 1887, this would mean he was 45 when he married?

The had three children in Erpingham and they may have moved to N Walsham there were four more MMN Rogers, the last being 1948.

Do you know hen James died?

As far  as I have been able to find out

Joan McCann was born in 1935 and her parents were definitely a James McCann and Selina Rogers. The 1939 Census shows their birth dates as :

James 16th March 1887
Selina 11th October 1901

So yes he was a lot older than her. it would appear James must have died before 1952 when Selina married Walter Jeary.

Unfortunately I do not have the marriage certificate for Selina and James which of course will show me the name of his father. That I think is my next port of call

Index to England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1920-1932, has a George McCann in Northrepps.
McCann was not a common name in Norfolk!
George possibly living near to Selina Elizabeth Rogers, who was also in Northrepps.
Don't have any more info though.

Unfortunately I think the family tree where I found this information must be incorrect especially as there was no substantial evidence to prove George was James' father.

Thanks for everyone's help, I will send for the marriage cert tomorrow.
