« on: Friday 21 May 21 11:21 BST (UK) »
Hi i was wondering if anyone has access to newspaper articles surrounding the death of Jane Burden born abt 1849 died 1951 daughter to a Henry and Betsey Burden Weare Gifford Devon. Story has it she was involved in a tragic accident. Also their next daughter Lucy Burden born abt 1851 died 1856 i wonder if there is any info on how she died?

Any info on this family would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

FindMyPast have the article on Jane's death - North Devon Journal of 24 April 1851.

9 April - Mother (Betsey) left Jane (19 months) in the house whilst she went to the well.  Jane's clothes caught fire, she ran outside and was seen by a neighbour who stripped her clothes off.  Jane died the following afternoon.

Added - also Exeter & Plymouth Gazette - 19 April 1851

I noticed on GENUKI there are inquests for the period 1895-1904 in Devon i wonder if there are records anywhere earlier than 1895?

Thank you. In the case of Jane Burdens accident do you think there would have been a inquest held and if so any ideas how i would be able to find the details?

Yes, there was an inquest - J H Toller, Esq, Deputy-Coroner was the official - verdict = Accidental death by burning.  Taken from the newspaper entry.
