Working backwards

Thomas NEWINGTON of St Nicholas, Brighton was buried 18 Apr 1831 aged 65 thus a birth around 1766.

His wife Louisa Ann NEWINGTON nee NASH was buried near her husband Thomas on 07 Jul 1848 aged 70.

Thomas was a widower when he and Louisa married 24 Jul 1823 at St Giles, Camberwell, Surrey.

It seems Thomas previous wife may have been a Mrs Mary NEWINGTON also of St Nicholas, Brighton buried 3 Sep 1809 aged 43 thus a birth around 1766 [about the same age as Thomas].

There is a marriage between a Thomas NEWINGTON of Brighton [a widower] and Mary KENT [a widow] at Brighton 16 Jan 1805.  Is this Mary the Mary KENT buried in 1809 as above?

A possible marriage for a Mary to a KENT is the marriage of Mary GRENVILLE & Richard KENT 12 Jul 1788 with a Richard KENT bur 5 Jan 1801.

However we need another marriage for Thomas as he was a widower when he and Mary KENT married.

I think this is probably the family of Thomas & Mary Irish

Hello Colin,

I too found the same birth records as the most likely one but I'm not sure about the Mary IRISH marriage. 

Thomas was noted as a Gentleman in his Will.  Would it seem that someone who is classified as a Gentleman would not be able to sign his name?

I see your latest post re the IRISH marriage at Yapton and and I concur but who did he marry?

Possible for further research
Thomas Newington married Ann Griggs 12 December 1792 St Martin in the Fields Westminster.
witnesses are Ann Barnard and ? Barnard

John Barnard Newington baptized 9 January 1795 in Brighton died 20 October 1801 buried Brighton.
Not unusual to name a child for a wealthy relative.

I've not found a death for Ann though.

On Freereg there is an Ann Newington burial 15 April 1796 no age given at St Nicholas of Myra Brighton.

Also to the memory of Mary the second wife of Thomas Newington who died August 28, 1809 age 44
and of Mary Ann their daughter who died January 20, 1808 age 10 days
and Thomas George their son who died August 8, 1800 age 10 weeks. (this should be 1809 possibly the stone has weathered.)

 So Ann Griggs was his first wife .
son Thomas George was bap 26 June 1809 buried 13 August 1809, daughter Mary Ann bap 11 December 1807 buried 22 December 1807 (the date is wrong on the tombstone)
