Mary ?, wife of Richard England
« on: Monday 24 May 21 12:53 BST (UK) »
I'm struggling to decipher the maiden name of Mary in this parish register entry from Blakesley, Northants, England 1550:

Richard England & Mary ..... were maried October 16

Any ideas?

My first thought was Mary May, but the shape of the M and Y seem wrong.

So, taking it letter by letter.... what could the last letter be?  I think it's most likely to be G.  If so, the best fit for the preceding letter would be N.  There is a dot above the word - unless this is a blemish, this suggests the letter I.  If (and it's a big if!) I am on the right track, the surname would end ___ING.  But I can't figure out the beginning!

Thanks Phillip

...ing was one option I was considering. I was not having much luck finding similar patterns on the page, but just found this one below.

This looks almost certain to me as Katherine Farrer, and the "ine" of Katherine looks a close match to the latter half of Mary's surname. What do you think?

Even if it is, I'm no closer to getting the first half ???

I read it as Owin. There is no e on the end, either here or on Katherin, above.

Ah, thank you. I was fixated on the penultimate 'hump' being the n with something following it, but now I can see other similar ns around the same pages.

Yup, I will abandon my suggestion of the G ending - Owin looks good to me.
