Jules Alphonse Vanmeulbrouck b 1847 at Roubaix France
« on: Wednesday 26 May 21 14:15 BST (UK) »
Im researching Jules Alphonse Vanmeulbrouck born at ROUBAIX FRANCE in 1847.
Jules came to England and was entered in the 1871 Census along with his wife Ellen ne Ballinger at Stamford Lincolnshire England.
Jules died at Cheltenham in 1928 and a death item in the local paper there said he had been involved in the American Civil War (1861 to 1865) and had been wounded twice.  It has been said he was a Drummer Boy.
His father remained in France so I think a lad of 14 in 1861 wouldn't be established in the US. What seems more likely is that Jules was involved in Emperor Napoleon the Third's campaign against Mexico.

At this stage I'm concentrating on the period  from 1847 to 1871.
Any thoughts on routes I might take or any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks for replying Decor
Yes I have seen a copy of the birth certificate.
Born 23 June 1847. mother Anne Marie Reufflart a rag seller aged 37 and father was Joseph Vanmeulbrouck a construction worker.
I can find no sign of any marriage for Jules and Ellen.  In the 1911 census the marriage duration is listed as 41 years.  Ellen Ballinger came from Worcester.

Thank you for your interest.
Its extremely unlikley that Ellen Ballinger ever went outside England.
Born in 1851 at Worcester and Living at Cheltenham in the 1861 Census, a scholar. Then her appearance with Jules in 1871.
According to the birth registration for her son Alphonse 1876, she was not literate, in 1871 she was a Charwoman. I'm sounding superior, hopefully just factual.

Garstonite
Thank you for your findings
I have swept up all the variations of the Meulbrouck name at this stage relying on the continuity of the   family information.
My problem is that I need support to venture into French records, my language skills are zero. So until then I'm stuck.
If Catherine is a brother of Jules c 1847 this would be another family line to ask questions about the Civil War/ Napoleon link.

I am a little confused - The Napoleonic Wars were 1803 - 1815 ...32 years before Jules was born ???  what is the connection ??
