Samuel Harper Born 1812 • Horsham St Faith, Norfolk
« on: Sunday 30 May 21 13:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I have a Samuel Harper Born 1812 in Horsham St Faith, Norfolk, on all his census 1841 to 1881 his occupation was a gardener, which must have been fair good profession in the 1800's He lived in Costessey, Norfolk.

My quest is, I am trying to find out, where he was employed, can anyone help please.

Welcome to Rootschat

Neither the 1841 or 1851 give any clues as to his actual address so difficult to say if he worked on an estate.  Gardener was quite a common occupation

1861 shows him as a journeyman gardener

Cheers for your reply, on looking at the later census, it seems he lived on, The street in  Costessey, Norfolk.

He must have done ok, for him self with so many children, maybe he worked at Costessey Hall

He did seem to get around a bit.
Bapt of his 1st child Samuel 1835 was in Norwich ( with 1st Wife Mary Ann Smith) + Emma Bapt there also 1837.
Mary burial was 29 Nov 1843 Costessey age 36
(FreeREG)

Its strange as Samuel/Mary Ann Burchams marriage is on FreeREG but no Father named for her.

Her Bapt is on FreeREG 1826 and her sister Marthas 1831.

I know I am off track but had to find out why a 2 year old Martha Burcham on 1851 Census would be working ::)

The image does state 2, no indication of any other number alongside.  It could have been an error by Samuel when completing the form or the enumerator when entering it.

I would have expected the enumerator to mention where he was working if at The Hall, he seems to give a full employer in other instances.  As for his large family I doubt that would have any relevance to the size of his income.  ;D

Yes the age 2 was confusing and as you say should have been 20 for Martha.
