Ticknor, Shere
« on: Tuesday 01 June 21 00:16 BST (UK) »
Kia Ora

I am wanting to find a photo of Moon Hall, I have looked on-line etc.

At the same time Moon Hall was held (of Coneyhurst Manor) by William Ticknor,
I am also trying to get my head around exactly what this means?

Is this the "Moon Hall" designed by George Lawrence KENNEDY?

Picture here
https://www.rostronandedwards.com/Shop/Country_Life_Magazine/7346

"Mr. G. L. Kennedy
...
On demobilisation he took up architecture and a school friend commissioned him to build a house for him called Moon Hall, Shere, Surrey, in order that he might have first-hand experience of building. This house was an unqualified success and he later increased its size for Lord Macmillan who had bought it"

From an obit on Thursday,  May 6, 1954, The Times

Thanks - I should have said my reference comes from a piece about Maybankes Manor in sixteen hundreds.

MAYBANKES MANOR in the south of the parish, was occupied in 1503 by William Edsalle, and was granted with Somersbury Manor, Saltland, and Slehurst in Ewhurst to Thomas Salter in 1511.  About the same time Rumbemyr in Ewhurst was occupied by Richard Astret, and Marschall by Thomas Edsalle.  Lands called Mascalls Pipers and Potfelds were sold by Robert Browning to Nicholas Dendy in the 16th century.  At the same time Moon Hall was held (of Coneyhurst Manor) by William Ticknor, and land called Sprout or Prout was the subject of a dispute between Agnes Hill and her uncle, Richard Hill.  Thomas Hill sold it in 1608 to Sir Francis Wolley.

Ah, I see. I wonder if they named the new building after the old?

Anyway ... can't see any other references to it other than the one you already have. Not sure that it helps at all, there is this:

"Manor of Coneyhurst
Creation dates: 1537
Reference: LM/1128/15
Bond of Robert Tyknor of Cranleigh, yeoman, to Sir Edward Bray and Christopher More, esq, concerning purchase of interest in Coneyhurst manor, Ewhurst; [VCH records that Sir Edward Bray obtained the manor after 1553]
Creation dates: 12 Apr 1537"

from Surrey History Centre: "The Loseley Manuscripts: Records of the More and More Molyneux Family of Loseley Park"
http://www.northcravenheritage.org.uk/NCHT/RoyPriceArchive/FAMILIES/FAMILYFILES/FRANKLAND/morefamily.txt

Perhaps the Surrey History Centre may have more information?

Also this document :
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/682c0960-5571-42ab-9a5d-be6a48264aac

which mentions Sir Edward BRAY (of Coneyhurst Manor above) and a Richard TYCKNOR.

There is also this
" Losterford House was also called a Manor House in 16th century when in 1547 John Scarlet held it as the Manor of Shalford Bradestan Bradestone), then Thomas Paston and in 1579 Willian Tycknor (Tickner), whose family held it for many years."

Wonersh is some 6 miles (10km) from Shere.

Thanks for both of these.  I have Brays in my family tree also connected to the Ticknores.

I have sent several queries to the Surrey History Centre yesterday, I have been in touch with them many times.

I did see a building called Moon Hall in Dorking.

Yes, I read about the school yesterday. From memory the founder began her school in her home"Moon Hall" and as it expanded moved to the current building. I wondered if her home was the one designed by Kennedy.
