Locating Birth Record

Hi there!

I found a birth record on Lancashire OPC:

Baptism: 24 Sep 1843 St Mary RC, Oldham, Lancashire, England
Jas. Moore - [Child] of Denis Moore & Bridget (formerly Law?)
    Born: 12 Jun 1843
    Godparents: Math. Toll; Mary Mitchel
    Notes: [mother's surname is obscured by tight binding]
    Parents' Marital Status: con.
    Baptised by: Edmd. Hogan
    Register: Baptisms 1829 - 1852, Entry 1

I looked to see if I could locate it on FreeBMD None came back from Oldham, would one of the following be the one?

It's not Lancaster, mother's maiden name Thistlethwaite
It's not Preston, mother's maiden name Sumer
It's not Fylde, mother's maiden name Doughty
It's not Liverpool, mother's maiden name Taylor

That leaves Wigan, mother's name Fahy (could that be what has been transcribed as Law) but not sure a baby born in Oldham would be registered in Wigan.

Then there's Bolton, which is nearer to Oldham than Wigan is but, unfortunately, no mother's name is given.

Unless you're desperate for the mother's name there will be less information on the birth certificate than on Lancs OPC.  Perhaps if you look for a marriage for Denis Moore and Bridget that should give her maiden name.

Is this the family in 1851? No sign of James though?

MMN on both Julia and Sarah's births is Carroll.

Carried out the same GRO check and came to the same conclusion

Not having much luck with Julia or Sarah, if that's the correct Denis and Bridget

We also have to remember that it was not compulsory to register births until 1 January 1875.

I would have thought it would be easy to find James b 1843 ish and parents Denis and Bridget in the censuses,but am having no luck with any of them.

Another option is that James was born elsewhere (eg Ireland) and baptised after his parents moved to Oldham

Dennis Moore and Bridget Carroll married in Bradford in 1844, so possibly not the right family

Ah they were the only Denis and Bridget that I could find in the censuses.

As you say Mabel,maybe not the right family.

There's a Dennis and Bridget from Ireland who are living in Scotland in 1851 and  move on to London in 1861 and 71.  (he's Deme on Ancestry for 1851)  Again no James with them.
