John William Simpson
« on: Wednesday 02 June 21 00:15 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me to find out what happened to John William Simpson born 1st February 1848 in Toronto.   I've just recently found out about him on Ancestry.   His parents were William Simpson & Bridget Mahar (My Great Great Grandparents) who had 2 other children which I have information on.  I have their Birth Certificates. They are James Simpson born 1850 in Canada and MARY jane Simpson born 1844 in Canada.  His Mother Bridget, was born in Waterford, Ireland and married William in Canada in 1843.  William was killed in 1854 in the Battle of the Alma in the Crimean War and Bridget returned to Hopeman, Morayshire, as she was on the 1861 Census with James.  I'm presuming the Hopeman address belonged to Simpson Family but the address on 1841 Census doesnt exist. Mary Jane was visiting someone in Elgin on 1861 Census

Hi tazzy,

You can try contacting the Toronto Public Library, they have a wonderful genealogy dept and they may do a birth notices lookup for you.

Why do you suppose he stayed in Canada if the mother returned to Scotland when he was still a young child?

That's the mystery. I dont know what year she returned as there are no records but it wouldve been between 1854 & 1861.
Maybe he died, although I cant find a death or maybe he enlisted as you likely know, that it was possible at an early age

He was born in 1848 and she was home by 1861, it is unlikely she left him behind.  Where are the other two children in 1861?  The 1851 Census for Toronto has not survived and this pre-dates civil registration in Ontario by several years, so no real way of knowing if he died as an infant.

Also, the burial records for St Paul's from late 1849 are online and browseable (not searchable) at FamilySearch, but I haven't looked through all of them.  When James was born in 1850, where was the family?

James and Mary Jane were on 1861 Census  in Morayshire, James was with his Nother and Mary Jane was visiting someone. I did state this in my original post.  They were both born in Kingston, Ontario
