Found a sketch in my papa's attic barn
« on: Friday 04 June 21 17:21 BST (UK) »
Need help deciphering the the artist's signature! To me, it looks like it could be Harry or Henry Wely, 1909. Any ideas??

The sketch looks like it could be migrants resting by a body of water.

Thanks!

You can see the mark made by the plate, so it is a signed print of some kind. The date is 1919. Perhaps it is a WW1 subject. I don't think it is Harry or Henry. Maybe J Craig We....

Hello and welcome to RC!

My ideas are often influenced by the fact that I live in Germany  ::), but there are 2 dots over the first name, which makes me wonder if it could be Heinrich...
And the surname could be Wolff.

Best regards,
Karen

Edit: Just found this:

Look at the sig. It's HWolff, but too similar to be a coincidence!

Hi Karen,

I think you may be correct! I was able to find a few other prints by him, and it seems the print that I have was by the same artist.

How would I know if this is an original? Maybe just a copy?

I wish I could post the entire print, but the attachment is too big

Well found Karen.  :)

The initial “H” and the surname are definitely the same.

Would you mind posting the picture for us to see rgallagher?

Thanks!  :-*
It's quite a buzz, finding the right artist.  :)

Lovely picture, rg! I'd hang that on my wall.  ;D

It’s well done and I agree with Karen that you should frame and hang it.

Get the opinions of others but it looks like a signed print, so likely to be original, especially with those ink lines visible around the edge of the print particularly on the bottom right. Is the paper heavy, and does it feel rough or textured? Is the area of the picture slightly indented/pressed in from the edge of the paper?

It’s not the sort of subject matter I would associate with a more modern commercially produced print. The paper would feel different in a reproduction too.
