Joseph TILLEY m. June BARRATT 1827
« on: Sunday 06 June 21 14:26 BST (UK) »
I am revisiting my ancestral TILLEY family from the Langtons. When browsing the marriage banns on line I came across this one for Joseph TILLEY and Jane BARRATT (could be Barrett) were married "in this Chapel" by banns on April 27th 1827. (There is a margin note which reads "Returned May 7th 1827"  - any idea what that means?)

My problem is that I have been unable to find the parents for this Joseph. It does say "in the presence of Sarah Tilley"

Admittedly the Tilleys in the Langtons were very productive. I do have a John Joseph Tilley who married Sarah Marsh in Hendon, London - but that was in 1816: a bit early for this Joseph.

Joseph and Jane had a son baptised Thomas Barret Tilley on November 4th 1832.

I would appreciate thoughts and guidance

Many thanks -
Alan

Going by the 1861 census, this is the probable baptism:-

Joseph Tilley
Baptism: 17 Jun 1804, Haverfordwest, St Mary, Pembrokeshire
Parents: Francis and Hannah

Joseph's wife came from Fen Stanton, so this could be Francis's marriage:-
Francis Tilley and Hannah Beldam on 29th July 1803 in Fen Stanton, Huntingdonshire.
Witness1 - John TILLEY
Witness2   Phoebe BELDAM

David

P.S. Looked again at the 1851 census and his birth place is St Mary, Haverford

I note that Jane Tilley, nee Barratt, bc.1804, buried 23/10/1834 Langtons.

Joseph, widower, remarried to another Jane (bc.1816) - a Jane Tilley 9/1/1837 Langtons.

Hi David

I guess that begs the question - what on earth were they doing in South West Wales? That is the correct marriage for Francis Tilley and Hannah Beldam (July 1803). Fenstanton to Haverfordwest is nearly 300 miles and by dates Hannah would have been pregnant by autumn 1803 for Joseph to be in a fit state to be baptised there by June 1804. Then Francis and Hannah had a t least one daughter,  Mary, baptised in Fenstanton in 1808.

Hi Annette

This is getting more involved (and intriguing). Referring to the 1851 census, Joseph and Jane Tilley, now living in Medbourne have 7 children. If Jane is Joseph's second wife, that raises the same question - who were her parents? This census also says that she came from Fenny Stanton - same as Francis Tilley's wife, Hannah. Looking at the GRO birth records two of the later children do show their mother's maiden name to be Tilley.

I haven't made another link between this Huntingdon / Cambridgeshire town and the Tilley family.

Cheers Alan

The GRO index has the mmn of the children for the second Jane as Tilley, so that was definitely her maiden name

There were some Tilleys in Fen Stanton at the right time but no Jane - https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/60bcf7b44325a6e5dbdca03a?locale=en
