Caernarvonshire / Caernarfonshire
« on: Monday 07 June 21 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hi

First I apologise this question will be so simple to most of you. I've seen two differing answers and got mixed up. I want to make sure I get this right.

Has Caernarvonshire been renamed to Caernarfonshire, or is it the other way around please?
Did the renaming happen 1 July 1926?

I currently have people in my family tree who on the census were living in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire (as per the transcriptions on Ancestry).  But I've got some of them as being born or baptised as Llanbeblig, Caernarfonshire.  All events were before 1926, so should have the same spelling for the place name?

I don't know Wales at all.  Thank you

The f in Welsh is pronounce as a v. Caernarvon /shire was change to Caernarfonshire in 1974.  Previously Carnarvon was changed to Caernarvon in 1926.

Now in Gwynedd.

Thanks Gadget!  I'm really grateful.

So I should use Carnarvonshire for events and records until 1926?
Then Caernarvonshire until 1974
Then Caernarfonshire?
