Victoria - Events at Sea Index
« on: Thursday 10 June 21 08:15 BST (UK) »
Looking for the Events at Sea Index reported to be available via Vic BDM's web site.

Their BDM site seems to be running round in circles and hanging at the moment (at least for me)

I'm looking for the death/burial of : WORTHINGTON (Leonard) - died at sea June 1868 on ship Beatrice.
Hoped the death was on the usual BDM index but having a bit of a problem looking there so thought I'd try the Events at sea as well.

Don't quite know what I'm doing wrong but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Di

Hi
I agree with you that  there apparently is not  record for his death in either section of the index.
There are a few detailed accounts in newspapers.

To you need them linked?

Many thanks for checking Sue. It's odd that his death isn't registered anywhere.

Thanks but don't need links for newspapers - I have Aust & UK papers covered.

Appreciate your help  :-*

I think that regulations at the time required that a death be registered at the next port of call.

This article gives lat. and long. for location of the death, 1 Jun 1868.

Thanks wivenhoe - I also believed that a death would be registered at the next port of call.
It seemed that the first place they had stopped, after he died, was Melbourne.
I think that log/lat is off the SE corner of South Africa (if I have my facts right) and there's not a lot of places to stop in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Thanks for the news link - I have Aust & UK newspapers.

... maybe I should check Perth records  :P
