Shegog & Cousley Families
« on: Sunday 20 June 21 03:02 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to discover more about my ancestors from Derry. Sinclair Shegog (1813?-1890) was the son of George Shegog and Catherine St Clair Getty. I know very little about George and Catherine except that they had 11 children and George was a farmer (the farm was called Evergreen). Sinclair was the only child that stayed in Ireland, taking over the running of the farm from George, whilst his siblings moved to the USA or Australia.

Sinclair married Margaret Cousley, (1839?-1909) daughter of John, a farmer from Moneyshanere (John and his wife Margaret are buried in Tobermore Presbyterian Church Old Graveyard). Sinclair and Margaret were married in the Meeting House, Tobermore, Parish of Kilcronaghan. Together they had 13 children and the place of birth listed on each birth certificate was ‘Bracca’, District of Draperstown. I am descendant from their daughter Margaretta Woods Shegog (1859? -1922) who married Isaac Clarke (1886-1955) from Belfast . Sinclair is buried at Kilcronaghan Church of Ireland Graveyard, Tobermore with his son John and his wife Elizabeth Ellen. I am unsure where Margaret is buried or if the farm still exists. I am really keen to chat to anyone who has a connection to either the Shegog or Cousley family.

Thanks so much KG for posting links to those records - I hadn't thought to do that. Hopefully someone in the community has a connection to them (and maybe me)!

Dear Julsto
I have quite a bit of information on the Cousleys of Moneyshanere farm which is still in existence. Your ancestor Margerette Woods Shegog was named after her Grandmother Margaret Woods Cousley.
The farm at Moneyshanere was inherited by James Cousley from his Father John but was later bought from him by Margaret Shegog his sister who I thought was buried with her husband Sinclair in Tobermore but I can check that. Most of that Cousley family immigrated to Australia leaving James  and Samuel at home. The farm was later sold to the McCleans from Tobermore and the
Shegogs built a small bungalow on the opposite side of the road
from the farm. I know they are not there anymore and I don't think the shegog name is currently in Tobermore. Moneyshanere was inherited
by Bert McClean who by chance is married to My Aunt Sheila Cousley so the Cousleys are back in the farm in a way! If you are interested I have photos of the house in Moneyshanere which is much the same as it always was and is a very old dwelling. There are quite a few stories go with the Cousleys of Moneyshanere!
