Excise Duty
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 15:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,  I found this document on LANCAT
Borough of Oldham
Take notice I shall appeal & do appeal to the general quarter sessions to be holden next after the expiration of 20 days from the judgement given this day by (3 Justice of the peace for the borough of Oldham) in the matter of information exhibited by me Robert Young on behalf of HM against Joseph Collin for the recovery of the penalty of £200 for breach of the excise laws by which judgement I feel myself aggrieved. Dated at Oldham 12 August 1868

  next sheet-----
Salford Sessions October 1868

I can't find any further mention of this case in the papers or on Ancestry, £200 was a lot in 1868 so would have thought there would be something, maybe he paid up or it was thrown out of court?
Thank you for any thoughts

ADDED
I checked Betty out in that census - aged 16 and still at school - so I presume a Private School - so they must have had money .. :)

Ha ha he probably married for money, he was a bit of a rogue, was fined several times for selling out of hours, did a year in prison for taking a pot shot at a gamekeeper whilst poaching, and when his sister died he stopped her daughter taking over her pub, as her fathers executor he said she was unfit to run a large establishment, she died 3 weeks later but got her revenge by leaving all to her fiancee. Then he was in the papers for disgraceful scenes at a funeral, he switched the fiancee across his face. So I really hope he had to pay the £200 duty
