civil registration for James Steel Anderson
« on: Friday 09 July 21 11:29 BST (UK) »
This is the civil registration for James Steel Anderson.

2 questions
Why is there no maiden name for the mother, even though it appears she was married? Does the "V" mean something?

James Steel appears to have been named after the registrar, why would that be?!

The registrar is indicating that the mother is not a married woman.  ANDERSON should be her maiden surname if the 'formerly' is crossed out.  It is a common surname so there is no reason why the father and mother shouldn't have the same birth surname.  The father may also be fictitious.

The registrations are informant based so the registrar can only record what he is told.

A Mary Jane ANDERSON, spinster of Liffock married Samuel McCANDLESS in 1884.

Perhaps the Registrar was the real father, considering the child's name  ;D

Well the plot thickens!  :o.
He was single, he was the Medical Practitioner as well as the Registrar and Magilligan was the next hamlet over from where he lived.. There are no Andersons living in Magilligan in 1901( other census records have been destroyed).  I do hope he wasn't a doctor abusing his status!

Rachel ANDERSON also registered the birth of Samuel and Mary Jane McCANDLESS' first child.

Brilliant, thank you! I'm assuming Rachel is Mary's mother for now.

Yes, I think Rachel was her mother.  William and Eliza ELLIOTT witnessed Mary Jane's marriage - Elizabeth ANDERSON married William ELLIOTT in 1881.

Elizabeth was also the informant when Rachel died.
