Axwell Park School, Blaydon
« on: Sunday 11 July 21 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hi

The 1939 Register shows that my relative was an 'inmate' at Axwell Park School, Blaydon on Tyne. He would have been 11 years old.
His parents were living in Byker, with his 15 year old brother. His 7 year old sister was also living away, in Durham RD but the street details are still closed.

I read about Axwell Park School on the Children's Homes website. It became an Approved School in 1933.  http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/NewcastleAxwell/

Does anyone know if the Axwell Park in 1939 would have still been only for children 'in trouble' or at risk, or would it have taken regular pupils from Byker as well. I'd like to find out why he was there, and as much as I can.

I was told he later joined the Army, when he was on 17 but thats 3rd hand information.

Thanks

To be in an approved school a child had to be in one of these categories

Was found guilty of an offence which, in the case of an adult, would be punishable by a prison sentence.
Was found to be in need of care, protection or control.
Was deemed to be 'refractory' while in the care of a Local Authority Children's Department.
Was brought back to Court because of behaviour while on probation.
Had run away from the care of a Local Authority or a 'fit person'.
Had come before the Court for truancy.

So I think it unlikely ‘regular’ pupils would have attended as well.

I've tried searching the newspapers on Find My Past but nothing comes up for the boys name. Axwell Park School comes up a lot about boys being sent there. The articles say why but not the name of the family. Which is best I suppose but not for me trying to find out about him!

Has anyone successfully viewed the admission and discharge registers for Axwell Park School held by Tyne and Wear Archives please?

Yes, I once viewed these.  I have only a vague recollection of them now though.
If you can prove your relative is deceased you might be able to have paid research done by the archives staff.  School admissions can't be viewed by the public in general until after 100 years.

Thank you. I emailed the archives and they confirmed I can't view the records (understandable) but can pay for them to research.
