1881 Census - Millbrook Southampton
« on: Wednesday 14 July 21 14:39 BST (UK) »
Can anyone throw any more light on where exactly this family were living in Millbrook in 1881 please:
Herbert Harris - Head - age 60- yeoman- born Ringwood
Rachel harris- Wife- age 50
William Harris- son- age 11
Kate Middleton-stepdaughteer-age 16
Emma Middleton- daughter in law- age 22

All born in Ringwood

This family are in Ringwood for all of the other censuses but I would like to know a bit more as to why they were In Millbrook in 1881. In 1871 Herbert has stated thta he is a retired servant yet in 1881 he states he is a yeoman. He then died in 1888 and is stated as a gentleman on the Probate of his Will.

Many thanks

Caroline

They were living at Bellvue Cottage, Millbrook Road.  The road seems to consist of villas & cottages occupied by fairly well-to-do people.

Are you saying that you don't have the exact address?

Image shows that they are living at Bellevue Cottage, and I am assuming that it is on Millbrook Road.  Properties either side of Bellevue Cottage are Millrose Cottage, then BC, then Enriqueta Villa and Lindon Villa.

The Enumerator's walk includes - Part of Millbrook Road from Cliff Road on the one side and Mrs Moodies' on the other side to Foundry Lane4, Waterloo Road, Alma Road ........
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

In case it's significant to your research James Bessant, a malster, was living at 220 Millbrook Road in 1884.

The same 1884 street directory lists Enriqueta Villa as number 197
Wm Smith, a malster, was living at 195
the house next to 197 is 201 - odd!

Thank you- that is very significant indeed as I have property in Ringwood bought by Isaac Veal (maltser/.brewer/distiller) from John Bessant Veal who is listed as Gentry in Ringmer in 1855 but who originated from Ringwood. This is becoming a very complex jigsaw to work out who was doing what during a 100 year window from around 1840 to 1940! But perserverance will win! I had better start to see how the Bessant family now fit in!
Thank you for your diligence xx
