Ecclesfield Parish - place query
« on: Saturday 17 July 21 09:50 BST (UK) »
I've stumbled across an ancestor born/baptised in the parish of Ecclesfield

The said ancestor, is William Slatter (bap Aug 1671) son of William Slatter. According to the Ecclesfield parish records the family is cited as living in Woodhead or Wood Head within the parish.

I can find a Woodhead Road in Ecclesfield on Genuki, so clearly the place did exist, but no sign of the place itself across any number of searches I've googled.

The only such place I can find was in Derbyshire in reference to the construction of the Woodhead Tunnel.

Does anyone have any knowledge of Woodhead, its existence and its history

Stupid question coming up  :-[  Have you seen the parish register entry, or just the transcription for this baptism?

I can see the transcription for Will, son of Will Slater of Woodhead - baptised 13 August 1671.

I can also see the parish register entry for Will, son of Will WALKER of Woodhead - baptised 13 August 1671.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi, yes I've seen register entry as opposed to just a transcription

Cheers, Paul

Just found the one you found - the BT's for the parish. So we have William - either Slatter (BT) or Walker (parish register) - baptised on 13 August 1671.  :-\

Even more confusing is that there are three versions of the same page - two I am assuming of the parish register as both are for Walker and the same handwriting but one is from PR115/3 = image 70 of 487 and the other is from a different source (can't see a reference) = image 62 of 439.  The BT image is 104 of 729 - BT's from the Borthwick and is for Slatter.  At least the other August 1671 baptism surname is consistent = Oxpringe.  8)

Added:  However, they all agree on Woodhead  ;)

Does this work? The 1892 map, to the right of the red marker. Greno Wood Nature Reserve on a modern map.
