Death of George Hurl, husband of Annie McKenzie Taylor
« on: Sunday 18 July 21 18:59 BST (UK) »
George Hurl was born abt 1842 to William John Hurl and Mary Anne Watterson. He married Annie McKenzie Taylor in 1866 in Scotland. They had two sons in Scotland prior to having a son Daniel Taylor Hurl in 1872 in Carraloan, Co. Derry. Then George disappears. Can't find a death for him either in Scotland or Ireland. Annie remarries in 1883 to Samuel Peat, both of them widowed.
there is an online tree that thinks George went to California but I don't think  it is the correct George. However.....
thanks for any help

Actually, not much fits. He was a carpenter, but not born Scotland, although he did live in Scotland during his marriage to Annie McKenzie Taylor. He is not single, although he could just say that. He was bapt Sept 25, 1842 in Ireland. So I am pretty sure this is not him. Thanks for checking.

Actually, *Sandra* may have found the correct George Hurl  ;)

Edinburgh Evening News, 18 Nov.1882: ... divorce to-day, in the Court of Session, action the instance of Ann _ or Hurl, Govan Street, Glasgow, against her husband, George Hurl, now residing California —Mrs Hurl stated that was married defender at Barrhead 1866, where they lived two three years, after which they removed to Glasgow. In July, 1872, she visited her husband's friends in Ireland, and while there she ...

Dundee Evening Telegraph, 18 Nov.1882: Divorce was also given against George Hurl, formerly residing in Glasgow. Ten years ago, during his wife's absence, sold the furniture and went to America. He …

Paisley & Renfrewshire Gazette, 25 Nov.1882: … the Court of Session, the Lord-Ordinary heard evidence and gave decree of divorce in the action Ann Taylor or Hurl … George Hurl, which was grounded on the husband's desertion of the wife. The pursuer, who resides at 21 Govan-street, Glasgow, was married …

Looks like George Hurl took off c1872 and went to America then in 1882 wife petitioned (and was granted a divorce). She remarried in 1883- is there any indication on the 1883 certificate that she was divorced?

This is fantastic, aghadowey. It has certainly been established that George deserted his wife and family and went to California. Annie says she is a widow in 1883.
Now to confirm that this is the correct George who died in 1915. Seems like it will be.
Thanks so much for finding all this. Much appreciated.

There is nothing of importance in George's declaration of intention to file for naturalization on Aug 1, 1892 in Amador Co., California. Would there be more papers later?
