Algeo family in or near Tullyskeherny
« on: Friday 23 July 21 09:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Trying to get some clarification on a forebear of mine, Charles Algeo.  According to a passenger list I saw back in 2018, he emigrated to Sydney, Australia, from Tullyskeherny in the latter half of the 19th century.  For context: Charles is my 3x great-grandfather. ;)

Upon some recent research I have been doing on my family tree, I am now know that Charles' full name is Charles Lockhart Butterfield Algeo (aka Charles Lockhart Algeo).  I am trying to sus out fact from fiction, as the passenger list I saw clearly stated Charles was the one that emigrated from Tullyskeherny, yet recent research is suggesting that either his father (William) or possibly grandfather (Robert?) was possibly the one who emigrated to Sydney.

Any clarification on the matter would be greatly appreciated  :)

What year was the voyage?
Was his occupation, marital status or age given?

Possibly best to start with Australian records (so much available in newspaper, etc.) before trying to find the family in Ireland especially since it's not yet clear exactly when this branch moved to Australia.

Here’s an outline of what’s posted on one online tree-
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Algeo-50
Robert H. Algeo (1787 Leterkenny, Donegal-1872 Manorhamilton) m. Anne Butterfield
[note: SantaT says Robert Newcomen Algeo]
1.   William Butterfield Algeo (1816 ‘Co Lutrim’- aft.1866 NSW) m.(1856 Manning River NSW) Mary Ann Lockhart
a.   Charles Lockhart Algeo (2 June 1857 Manning River NSW-26 Feb.1943 Bundaberg Qld) m. Fanny Crossingham- family
b.   William Henry Algeo
c.   Norman Lockhart Algeo

Another Algeo topic (Australia)- https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=565391.0

Charles Lockhart Algeo married Fanny Crossingham Charles Lockhart Algeo was born on 2 Jun 1857 at Scotts Creek, Manning River, the son of William Butterfield Algeo, a surgeon, and his second wife, Mary Logan (nee Lockhart). William and Mary were married on 5 Aug 1856. Mary Logan had come from Edinburghshire, Scotland, with her daughter, Sarah, on the ship ttBeett. William Butterfield Algeo was born in County Leitrim, Ireland, the son of Robert N Algeo, Lt Colonel, in the Portuguese service, and Anne Butterheld. Harriet, the first wife of William Butterfield Algeo, died on 28 Feb 1847 aged28 years.

Adam also reported death of Isabella, wife of Charles, on same day as he reported his father's death, although her death was months earlier.

I agree with aghadowey's advice about firming up information on Australian side before tackling Ireland. I received a message this week about new additions to Australia passenger lists on Find My Past.
Algeo men may have travelled to Australia and back again if they were in the army, navy or colonial service. A connection of one of my families was a missionary in Australia. He made several voyages in 1830s & 1840s between England, Australia and Ireland. (He'd been a sailor in his youth before he got religion and any opportunity to go to sea again was welcome.)

I can confirm Charles Lockhart Algeo is my forebear, as I'm a decendant of the Crossinghams through Fanny (their daughter, Gretrude, is my 2x great grandmother).

One can understand my confusion with the emmigration document and the recent evidence presented before me.  And yes, I'm now going with the recent evidence over that document.  Also, Trove and Ancestry threw me for a loop and confused the life out of me, hence why I came here heheh

So William B. Algeo was the one who came out to Australia... does anyone have any further info on him? Also for Robert as well?

Side note: I recognised that PDF link as an excerpt from the Crossingham family tree book - I completely forgot about reading that book/page *facepalms*.

I'm unsure on all the above as I haven't had access to said document in nearly 3 years.

I believe that either the emmigration document is incorrect with the name, or I read it wrong, as recent evidence strognly suggests that it was Charles' father, William, who was the one who came out (hence my confusion  ???)

Black, in his Scottish Surnames, has Algeo/Algie from Renfrewshire, the first of the name came from Rome in the suite of an abbot of Paisley, his grandson Peter Algoe, a burgess of Paisley, married an heiress, Marion Morton, and got the lands of Easter Walkingshaw in 1547.
Presumably a descendant crossed the sheuch to Ireland?

Bests,
Skoosh.
